Soldiers with Ukraine\u2019s International Legion<\/a> attacked a village where Russian troops were hiding after their armoured vehicles were blown up.<\/p>\n A 12-man team hurled grenades, fired rocket launchers, including Bulspike anti-armour rounds, and opened up with machine guns during the raid in Lyubimovka.<\/p>\n An ex-British Army soldier who took part in September\u2019s assault said five British volunteers were involved and three were wounded, with two Russians killed and another two escaping into nearby forest.<\/p>\n GoPro footage shows a British soldier being hit in the leg but continuing to shoot his weapon during a firefight with Russian troops when their patrol was ambushed at close quarters during Ukraine\u2019s surprise incursion into the Kursk region.<\/a><\/p>\n One of the men, who previously served The Rifles regiment of the British Army, said he was inspired to fight in Ukraine<\/a> after helping train Ukrainian troops in the UK as part of Operation Interflex in 2022.<\/p>\n The soldier, originally from London who uses the call sign \u201cKnight\u201d, told The i Paper of the assault: \u201cWe got tasked to go and clear out the remaining forces of the Russian assault units that survived.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Ukrainians that were defending the positions at this village managed to destroy most of their armoured vehicles.<\/p>\n \u201cWe deployed just before the sun came up and began with a large rate of fire from RPGs and machine guns.<\/p>\n \u201cWe didn\u2019t really know how many guys were in this house until afterwards. We all prepared for the worst.<\/p>\n \u201cOne of the Russians died by grenade, and then the other one died presumably by the initial rate of fire when we started RPG-ing the house.\u201d<\/p>\n The international platoon<\/a> which took part in the assault, which also included French, Americans and Australian volunteers, is part of the 2nd battalion, the International Legion\u2019s tactical group.<\/p>\n Following the attack, a four-man clearance patrol was sent into the forest where Russian troops ambushed and opened fire on them from just a few feet away.<\/p>\n The British soldier running point was shot in the leg and fell to the ground, but carried on firing his weapon as he called out \u201ccontact\u201d to his comrades.<\/p>\n \u201cOne round hit his knee and went through, and then the other one hit his rifle. And then luckily, one skims his helmet, but missed his head completely,\u201d said Knight.<\/p>\n \u201cHe instantly started putting suppressing fire down. It felt like a long time while under fire, in the open, where we couldn\u2019t really dig down or find any hard cover.<\/p>\n \u201cThe point man and his team leader decided to take the initiative and run straight out into the open fields just to get out of the killing area. Normally, people don\u2019t survive ambushes.<\/p>\n \u201cMe and my team leader took turns to peel back. I decided to give him suppressive fire first, so I\u2019d let him move behind me, and then we just provided each other with covering fire.\u201d<\/p>\n He heard the bullets whizzing past him as they retreated to safety.<\/p>\n \u201cThat was my first time being ambushed in the open with no cover like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cHearing the rounds going past you from behind, I was thinking if I\u2019m going to get hit it\u2019s going to be in the back of my legs or the back of my body armour.\u201d<\/p>\n Another British fighter was injured by mortar shrapnel as they extracted the first casualty, with a Russian drone spying on them and guiding the enemy fire.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen it exploded behind me, the shrapnel luckily missed me and unfortunately, hit the guy in front of me, and lacerated the right side of his hip,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI saw him go down and I could see he was in a lot of pain.\u201d<\/p>\n A third British fighter was wounded in the shoulder and legs by mortar shrapnel as they ran across open fields.<\/p>\n This month, Russia recaptured a monastery that was one of the last remaining Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region<\/a> after 10 days of fierce fighting.<\/p>\n Hundreds of British nationals<\/a> are believed to have fought in Ukraine against Russian troops since Vladimir Putin\u2019s full-scale invasion in 2022<\/a> despite the UK government warning not to travel to take part in combat.<\/p>\n After arriving in January 2024, Knight said he spent six months fighting in trenches in the Luhansk region defending assaults from Russian troops.<\/p>\n The war has been \u201cbrutal\u201d, he said, with a huge increase in first person view (FPV) kamikaze drone attacks <\/a>this year.<\/p>\n He was motivated to fight in the warzone after five years in the British Army where he helped train Ukrainian troops as part of a multinational military operation.<\/p>\n![\"MUST](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_248534640.jpg\")
