The Prime Minister has blamed Brexit and Nigel Farage<\/a> for causing the surge in small boats crossing the channel.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir Starmer further fanned the flames in his row with the Reform UK leader<\/a> as he dubbed the dinghies \u201cFarage boats\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said that before Britain left Brussels, returns agreements with the EU would enable illegal migrants<\/a> to be sent packing.<\/p>\n

He accused Mr Farage of scuppering those deals and said he should take sole responsibility for Britain\u2019s broken borders.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI would gently point out to Nigel Farage and others that before we left the EU we had a returns agreement with every country in the EU, and he told the country it would make no difference if we left.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was wrong about that.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are \u2018Farage boats\u2019, in many senses, that are coming across the Channel.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also claimed that Farage has no interest in fixing the problem because his \u201creason to exist goes away\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir said: \u201cWhen we are trying to deal with our borders, we\u2019re trying to pass the Borders Bill to give more powers to law enforcement to deal with the small boats.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a returns deal with France. What does Nigel Farage do? He says he\u2019d rip it up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s ID cards to stop them working illegally in our economy. He says he\u2019ll reverse that.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t want to fix the problems because if the problem is fixed his reason to exist goes away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Labour conference began on Sunday, some 1,368 illegal arrivals have turned up on Britain\u2019s shores.<\/p>\n

The PM also hinted he will consider changing how courts apply human rights laws in migrant cases concerning \u201ctorture\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said ministers should \u201clook at issues\u201d in Article 3 of the ECHR, which is often used by dinghy arrivals to prevent their deportation.<\/p>\n

Migrants have used the treaty to complain that if they are returned to their home state, they will face inadequate conditions in prison.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir added: \u201cWe are seeing mass migration in a way we have not seen in previous years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose genuinely fleeing persecution should be afforded asylum \u2013 that is a compassionate act, but we need to look again at the interpretation of some of those provisions \u2013 not tear them down but look at the interpretation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s a difference between someone being deported to summary execution and someone who is simply going somewhere where they don\u2019t have the same level of healthcare, or for that matter the same prison conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd therefore, I do think we should look at issues like that again, I think there\u2019s quite an appetite to look at issues like that again.\u201d<\/p>\n
