To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/signup\/?utm_campaign=Yahoo-Licensed-Content&amp;utm_source=yahoo&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:HR Dive newsletter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">HR Dive newsletter<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Career growth can sometimes feel fake and performative, particularly for the 65% of U.S. workers who experience \u201cghost growth,\u201d or the illusion of advancement but no meaningful changes in pay, promotion or authority, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myperfectresume.com\/career-center\/careers\/basics\/ghost-growth-career-stagnation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to a Sept. 22 report;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to a Sept. 22 report<\/a> from MyPerfectResume.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">In fact, two-thirds of workers said they believe their employer engages in \u201cgrowth theater\u201d by performing support without real outcomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cFor many, the reward for a job well done is simply \u2026 more work,\u201d Jasmine Escalera, a career expert for MyPerfectResume, wrote in the report. \u201cThe findings paint a stark picture: more responsibility at work, same pay, broken trust and rising burnout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Employee burnout has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/burnout-rates-united-states\/747243\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reached the highest rate in nearly a decade;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reached the highest rate in nearly a decade<\/a>, according to Glassdoor data. A mention of \u201cburnout\u201d in employee reviews is connected with 26% lower ratings for employers, on average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">In the MyPerfectResume survey of 1,000 workers, 78% said they\u2019ve been assigned new job duties without receiving a raise or promotion. More than half said they\u2019ve been promised promotions or opportunities that never came to be, and more than a third said they\u2019ve never been adequately compensated for an increased workload.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Overwork without recognition tends to drain morale, Escalera wrote. Promises without follow-through can damage employee trust and lead to turnover, she noted. In the survey, nearly 7 in 10 said they\u2019ve considered quitting due to fake or performative growth, and almost 3 in 10 actually left a job for that reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">When thinking about real growth and support, workers pointed to concrete outcomes such as higher pay, better work-life balance, leadership roles, a clear promotion path, upskilling and autonomy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">HR leaders can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/employee-engagement-workload\/717775\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:improve engagement by considering employee workload;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">improve engagement by considering employee workload<\/a>, according to a report from McLean &amp; Co.
