{"id":466098,"date":"2025-10-01T15:36:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T15:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/466098\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T15:36:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T15:36:15","slug":"russia-dismisses-ukraine-warning-of-critical-situation-at-europes-biggest-nuclear-plant-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/466098\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia dismisses Ukraine warning of \u2018critical\u2019 situation at Europe\u2019s biggest nuclear plant \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">The Kremlin<\/a> has played down safety fears around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in occupied southeastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\">Ukraine<\/a> \u2013 the biggest such facility in Europe \u2013 as Kyiv said it faced a \u201ccritical\u201d situation after relying for a week on emergency generators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Russian troops seized the plant shortly after launching their all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Russian technicians now oversee the cooling and other systems that ensure the safety of its six reactors \u2013 all of which are shut down \u2013 and of spent nuclear fuel stored at the site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ukraine and Russia blame each other for shelling and drone strikes in the area that have repeatedly damaged electricity lines to the plant, forcing it to rely on backup diesel generators that have now been powering the facility for more than a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIt is now the seventh day \u2013 something that has never happened before,\u201d Ukrainian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\">Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a> said late on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe situation is critical &#8230; The generators and the plant were not designed for this, have never operated in this mode for long, and we already have information that one generator has failed. It is Russian shelling that prevents repair of the power lines to the plant and the restoration of basic safety,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is a threat to everyone \u2013 no terrorist in the world has ever dared to do to a nuclear plant what Russia is doing. And it is right that the world does not stay silent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said its monitors had reported that emergency generators at the plant were working and that water supply for cooling systems for the reactors and spent fuel storage sites was sufficient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhile the plant is currently coping thanks to its emergency diesel generators \u2013 the last line of defence \u2013 and there is no immediate danger as long as they keep working, it is clearly not a sustainable situation in terms of nuclear safety. Neither side would benefit from a nuclear accident,\u201d said IAEA director general Rafael Grossi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m in constant contact with the two sides with the aim to enable the plant\u2019s swift reconnection to the electricity grid,\u201d he added. \u201cIt is extremely important that off-site power is restored. I strongly encourage both sides to work with us and enable these essential repairs to take place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Next April will mark 40 years since the world\u2019s worst nuclear accident, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chernobyl\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chernobyl\/\">Chernobyl<\/a> in northern Ukraine, and Ukrainians are very concerned about the safety of the occupied Zaporizhzhia site and three functioning nuclear plants that remain under Kyiv\u2019s control.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"A woman walks past rubbish and debris strewn along a beach following a severe rainstorm in Odesa, on October 1st. Photograph: Oleksandr Gimanov\/AFP via Getty <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is foolish, to say the least, to accuse the Russian side of bombing a plant it controls &#8230; This is a Russian facility, it is under our control and therefore the Russian side ensures security at this plant,\u201d Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe Russian side is in constant contact with the IAEA and, in accordance with accepted norms and rules, informs the IAEA about the situation at the plant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is not clear whether diesel supplies to the plant could be affected by growing fuel shortages in parts of Russia and Russian-occupied territory. Analysts say 38 per cent of Russian oil refining capacity was out of action in late September, predominantly due to long-range Ukrainian drone attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As fighting and Russian air strikes continued in eastern Ukraine, at least nine people were killed in flash floods in and around the southern port of Odesa.
