Manchester council has made a \u00a380m promise to give residents in four areas of the city something they are \u2018crying out for\u2019.<\/p>\n

Town hall bosses were buoyed by the government\u2019s decision to award four neighbourhoods \u00a320 million each to improve the area.<\/p>\n

Benchill South & Wythenshawe<\/a> Central, Harpurhey<\/a> South & Monsall, Clayton<\/a> Vale, and Gorton<\/a> South are the neighbourhoods set to benefit over the next decade.<\/p>\n

Now, councillors across the political spectrum in Manchester have pledged \u2018every pound of this funding will be guided by the voices of local residents\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201c[It will] not be imposed on local community, but built with them,\u201d Labour<\/a> Coun John Hughes added.<\/p>\n

Coun Astrid Johnson, Manchester Greens\u2019 leader, welcomed the decision to put power in people\u2019s hands on how to spend the cash.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what people are crying out for: Autonomy. To give residents the opportunity to shape their neighbourhood and address their needs is what I really like about this,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

And Coun Emma Taylor called on chiefs to get on with the job: \u201cAt long last local people have certainty and control for their area. This will be led by the people who know their areas best.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am impatient to deliver change. Let\u2019s get those community conversations [going] as soon as possible to bring out residents on board and deliver those changes that will be felt for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Previously, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said money could be used to revive high streets, improve parks, and breathe new life into public spaces. Residents will also soon gain powers \u2018to seize boarded-up shops and block nuisance businesses\u2019.<\/p>\n
