{"id":466955,"date":"2025-10-01T23:10:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T23:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/466955\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T23:10:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T23:10:12","slug":"eu-trio-in-g7-look-for-us-japanese-backup-in-using-russian-assets-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/466955\/","title":{"rendered":"EU trio in G7 look for US, Japanese backup in using Russian assets \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The next G7 meeting among finance ministers is scheduled for Oct. 15 in Washington, where policymakers will head for the International Monetary Fund\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/meetings.imf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual meeting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/205063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> last month that it\u2019s considering using billions of pounds worth of sanctioned Russian cash to finance new loans to Kyiv. Canada is also \u201cvery aligned\u201d with the EU\u2019s initiative, its finance minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/g7-decisive-action-end-ukraine-war-canada-finance-minister-francois-philippe-champagne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told POLITICO<\/a> on Sept. 20. Most of Russia\u2019s frozen assets, however, reside in the EU, leaving Europe carrying most of the legal and reputational risk.<\/p>\n<p>The European Central Bank is concerned about any seizure and on Tuesday again called on the European Commission, during a virtual meeting of deputy finance ministers, to demonstrate how the reparations loan will not damage the euro\u2019s credibility, two diplomats on the call said.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission is confident that national guarantees from EU countries against the \u20ac140 billion loan will be enough to allay any legal concerns.
