The site of Ukraine\u2019s defunct nuclear plant \u2013 partially destroyed in a 1986 meltdown \u2013 lost power on Wednesday after Russia shelled a nearby substation, Kyiv said.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The UN\u2019s atomic energy watchdog said<\/strong> the blackout affected Chornobyl\u2019s confinement structure housing the plant\u2019s damaged reactor core, and that two emergency diesel generators were now supplying it with electricity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The incident comes eight days after the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in southern Ukraine also lost power<\/strong>. Russia has been accused of deliberately sabotaging the last remaining power line into the nuclear plant, after satellite imagery of the damaged area showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/01\/russia-accused-of-sabotaging-last-power-line-into-zaporizhzhia-nuclear-plant\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no sign of Ukrainian shelling that Moscow claimed was preventing a repair<\/a>. Outside power, normally used for cooling, has now been down for a record eight days, forcing the Russian operators of the plant in occupied <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a> to rely on back-up diesel generators to avoid a meltdown of its six reactor cores.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The United States will provide Ukraine with intelligence for long-range missile strikes on Russia\u2019s energy infrastructure,<\/strong> the Wall Street Journal and Reuters reported on Wednesday, as it weighs whether to send Kyiv weapons that could put more targets within range. The US has long been sharing intelligence with Kyiv but the Journal reported that the new development would make it easier for Ukraine to hit refineries, pipelines, power stations and other infrastructure with the aim of depriving the Kremlin of revenue and oil. US officials were also asking Nato allies to provide similar support, according to the newspaper.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>All European countries were affected by the \u201cRussian hybrid war\u201d,<\/strong> whether through drone incursions or sabotage, Denmark\u2019s prime minister has told an EU summit. \u201cI hope that everybody recognises now that there is a hybrid war, and one day it\u2019s Poland, the other day it\u2019s Denmark, and next week it will probably be somewhere else that we see sabotage or \u2026 drones flying,\u201d Mette Frederiksen told reporters on Wednesday. \u201cI think we are in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/01\/europe-dangerous-situation-since-second-world-war-russia-war-drones-sabotage\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most difficult and dangerous situation since the second world war.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The European Commission president said she saw a pattern, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/10\/poland-shoots-down-drones-over-its-territory-amid-russian-attack-on-ukraine-says-military\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drones in Poland<\/a> and the violation of Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets.<\/strong> \u201cThis pattern is coming from Russia, in so far as Russia tries to test us,\u201d Ursula von der Leyen said. In a paper to European capitals before Wednesday\u2019s meeting, the commission said the EU needed to pursue two plans with \u201cspecial urgency\u201d: a \u201cdrone wall\u201d to detect, track and shoot down such aircraft and a broader system to defend the EU\u2019s eastern borders \u2013 on land, in the air and at sea \u2013 known as eastern flank watch.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>G7 finance ministers pledged on Wednesday to take aim at those who are continuing to step up purchases of Russian oil,<\/strong> since Moscow\u2019s fullscale invasion of Ukraine. In a statement after a virtual meeting, officials from the Group of Seven advanced economies \u2013 Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States \u2013 agreed it was time to \u201cmaximise pressure on Russia\u2019s oil exports.\u201d The group said it was also giving \u201cserious consideration to trade measures and other restrictions on countries and entities that are helping finance Russia\u2019s war efforts, including on refined products sourced from Russian oil.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The French military has detained two people after boarding an oil tanker named on a list of Russia\u2019s \u201cshadow fleet\u201d<\/strong> vessels and suspected of being a launchpad for mystery drone flights that forced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/23\/drone-sightings-cause-disruption-delays-norway-denmark-airports\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closure of airports in Denmark<\/a> last week. French prosecutors said an investigation was taking place after the crew\u2019s \u201cfailure to justify the nationality of the vessel\u201d and \u201crefusal to cooperate\u201d. Photos showed navy personnel on the deck of the tanker, known as the Boracay, which has used numerous identities and was one of four Russia-linked vessels in the seas near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/denmark\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denmark<\/a> at the time of the drone sightings on 22 and 24 September, which so far have not been fully explained.
