{"id":46808,"date":"2025-04-24T14:23:09","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T14:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/46808\/"},"modified":"2025-04-24T14:23:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T14:23:09","slug":"keir-starmer-condemns-deadly-russian-attacks-on-ukraine-during-visit-to-rolls-royce-in-bristol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/46808\/","title":{"rendered":"Keir Starmer condemns deadly Russian attacks on Ukraine during visit to Rolls-Royce in Bristol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russian drones are killing Ukrainian civilians<a class=\"Badge_badge-link__41H_0 \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/\" data-testid=\"badge-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35 __className_193096\">Oliver Astley<\/strong> Content editor<\/p>\n<p>14:24, 24 Apr 2025Updated 14:31, 24 Apr 2025<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The UK stepped up demands on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/vladimir-putin\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin<\/a> to agree to an immediate unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine after a \u201cbrutal\u201d overnight strike on Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking on a visit to Bristol,<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/keir-starmer\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer<\/a> said the attack demonstrated that Mr Putin was \u201cthe aggressor here\u201d, comments which came after US President Donald Trump suggested Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelensky was the barrier to peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At least nine people were killed and more than 70 injured after a Russian strike on the Ukrainian capital amid further difficulties in peace talks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr Trump accused his Ukrainian counterpart Mr Zelensky of making it \u201cdifficult to settle\u201d the war with Russia over his opposition to recognising Moscow\u2019s annexation of Crimea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">During a visit to Rolls-Royce&#8217;s jet engine factory, in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/filton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Filton<\/a>, Sir Keir said: \u201cI think it\u2019s a real reminder that Russia is the aggressor here and that is being felt by the Ukrainians, as it has been felt for three long years now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s important to get Russia to an unconditional ceasefire. Obviously, we had talks in London this week, Paris last week. We\u2019re making progress towards the ceasefire. It\u2019s got to be a lasting ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cBut these attacks \u2013 these awful attacks \u2013 are a real, human reminder of who is the aggressor here and the cost to the Ukrainian people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The US administration is urging Kyiv to accept Russia\u2019s continued control of occupied Ukrainian regions and Moscow\u2019s ownership of the Crimean peninsula as part of a peace settlement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty, responding to an urgent question, told the House of Commons: \u201cThe UK\u2019s position regarding Ukrainian sovereignty is well known and our position has not changed, and we do not recognise Russian sovereignty over any territory illegally seized from Ukraine, including Crimea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cAnd when, how and what terms this war comes to an end can only be decided by negotiations, with Ukraine at the heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr Doughty earlier said the UK condemned \u201cRussia\u2019s most brutal missile and drone attacks on civilians, including overnight\u201d, describing them as \u201cabsolutely horrific scenes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The minister said talks held in London between the UK, France, Germany, the US and Ukraine were \u201cproductive and successful\u201d, adding: \u201cSignificant progress was made in reaching a common position on next steps and all agreed to continue close co-ordination and look forward to further talks soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But the talks between the nations on Wednesday were downgraded to technical discussions after US secretary of state Marco Rubio decided not to attend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel said: \u201cFor all the talks that are taking place, it is concerning that a clear, unified front in support of Ukraine which secures a peace on their terms has yet to emerge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Downing Street insisted it was not \u201ctaking sides\u201d between Ukraine and the US in the talks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Prime Minister\u2019s official spokesman said: \u201cWe share President Trump\u2019s desire to bring this barbaric war to an end and we are, as you saw in the talks yesterday in London, working closely with the US and other international partners to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, but we have been clear it remains the case that how and on what terms that war comes to end can only be decided by Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Russian drones are killing Ukrainian civiliansNews Oliver Astley Content editor 14:24, 24 Apr 2025Updated 14:31, 24 Apr 2025&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":46809,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8818],"tags":[381,748,393,4884,807,285,16,15,333],"class_list":{"0":"post-46808","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-bristol","8":"tag-bristol","9":"tag-britain","10":"tag-england","11":"tag-great-britain","12":"tag-keir-starmer","13":"tag-politics","14":"tag-uk","15":"tag-united-kingdom","16":"tag-vladimir-putin"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114393396197915392","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/46808","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=46808"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/46808\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/46809"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=46808"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=46808"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=46808"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
