{"id":468148,"date":"2025-10-02T10:02:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T10:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/468148\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T10:02:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T10:02:10","slug":"projects-that-are-life-changing-and-lifesaving-to-receive-government-cash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/468148\/","title":{"rendered":"Projects that are \u2018life-changing and lifesaving\u2019 to receive Government cash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A possible new cancer drug which researchers believe could be up to 500 times more effective than existing treatments is one of 18 projects being funded by a Scottish Government scheme that aims to encourage innovation.<\/p>\n<p>The new\u00a0Proof of Concept fund will award cash to \u201cgroundbreaking research\u201d being carried out at Scotland\u2019s universities in a bid to help development into commercial projects.<\/p>\n<p>With funding of \u00a32.95 million announced to help 18 projects, the Edinburgh University work to develop a new anti-cancer drug has received \u00a3125,000.<\/p>\n<p>Other projects being funded include a laser system that can detect faults in aircraft engines in five minutes \u2013 some 25 minutes quicker than other tools \u2013 and a new radiation-free ultrasound to detect breast cancer which could be developed as an alternative to current mammograms.<\/p>\n<p>Work to develop an alternative to palm oil \u2013 a common ingredient in many foods \u2013 which would be healthier, more sustainable and with fewer calories is also being funded.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes saw three of the projects to receive cash being demonstrated as she visited Edinburgh University\u2019s Institute for Genetics and Cancer on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The visit came after Scotland\u2019s first national innovation week last week \u2013 with Ms Forbes insisting \u201cinnovation must be our national endeavour\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Adding that the Scottish Government was seeking to support this \u201cacross all areas of society\u201d, she said: \u201cScotland\u2019s world-class universities have the ideas and inventions to help tackle global problems and improve lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new Proof of Concept fund will help bridge the gap between theory and practice, translating research into real-world impact which in turn drives Scotland\u2019s economic transformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe successful projects that we are supporting are quite simply inspiring.
