A huge sinkhole has been uncovered on one of Glasgow\u2019s busiest streets, prompting emergency traffic measures and urgent repair work.<\/p>\n

The void was discovered during ongoing sewer maintenance on Hope Street, between Bath Street and West Regent Street, where the road has already been reduced to a single lane.<\/p>\n

The discovery has heightened safety concerns for both motorists and pedestrians.<\/p>\n

The latest repair efforts add to weeks of disruption on Hope Street, where ongoing works have resulted in long delays for city centre commuters.<\/p>\n

Scottish Water<\/a> confirmed that there was a “real chance of a sinkhole opening,” warning it could pose a serious hazard if left unaddressed.<\/p>\n

In response, Glasgow City Council<\/a> has granted emergency permission to extend current traffic restrictions to allow for safe and immediate repair work.<\/p>\n

As it stands, Hope Street remains restricted to one lane.<\/p>\n

There is no left turn from West Regent Street northbound onto Hope Street, and no right turn from Hope Street eastbound onto West Regent Street.<\/p>\n

Images obtained by the Glasgow Times show the large square hole which has opened on the middle lane of the road.<\/p>\n

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: \u201cWe can only apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but this approach is necessary to carry out the repair while ensuring the safety of pedestrians, road users, and our teams.<\/p>\n

“Everything is being done to complete the work as quickly as possible, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of those affected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the disruption, local businesses in the area remain open and continue to trade as normal.<\/p>\n
