{"id":470772,"date":"2025-10-03T09:43:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T09:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/470772\/"},"modified":"2025-10-03T09:43:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T09:43:14","slug":"liverpool-launches-new-heat-network-to-power-thousands-of-homes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/470772\/","title":{"rendered":"Liverpool launches new heat network to power thousands of homes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            A pioneering\u00a0low-carbon heat network\u00a0harnessing energy from the\u00a0Leeds and Liverpool Canal\u00a0has been opened, marking a major milestone in Liverpool City Region\u2019s journey to net zero.<\/p>\n<p>The new\u00a0Mersey Heat Energy Centre, developed by\u00a0The Peel Group\u00a0and\u00a0Ener-Vate, was unveiled at\u00a0Princes Dock\u00a0in\u00a0Liverpool Waters. The project received\u00a0\u00a37.5 million\u00a0in funding from the\u00a0Heat Networks Investment Project (HNIP)\u00a0and will deliver\u00a0energy-efficient heating and hot water\u00a0to homes, businesses and public buildings across the city.<\/p>\n<p>Designed and built by\u00a0Vital Energi, the centre houses one of the UK\u2019s largest\u00a0two-stage water source heat pumps, provided by\u00a0Star Refrigeration. The system extracts heat from the nearby canal and distributes it through a\u00a06km district heating network, cutting\u00a0carbon emissions by 4,200 tonnes annually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liverpool City Region\u2019s Cabinet Member for Innovation, Cllr Liam Robinson, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe launch of the Mersey Heat Energy Centre is a landmark moment in Liverpool\u2019s journey towards a cleaner, greener future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a visible example of how Liverpool is leading the way on low-carbon infrastructure, protecting historic buildings, cutting emissions and creating long-term green value for our communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiverpool has long been a leader in climate action, and this project reinforces our commitment to achieving net zero. It\u2019s not just about infrastructure, it\u2019s about creating a legacy of sustainability that benefits our communities, our economy, and our environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud to see this vision and investment come to life, creating jobs in the emerging green economy. I want to thank all the partners involved for helping Liverpool take another bold step towards a low-carbon future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Quote from Cllr Liam Robinson\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"6bfc43c3-8a1c-4f75-a983-b7e9b967da42\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Liverpool canal heat QUOTE.png\" class=\"align-center\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The network will initially deliver\u00a020GWh of heat per year, serving up to\u00a06,700 homes\u00a0and\u00a01.3 million square feet of commercial space. Planning permission is already in place to expand the project to\u00a045GWh, enough to supply\u00a017,000 homes\u00a0with low-carbon heating.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Liverpool City Region, which was the first in the UK to declare a\u00a0climate emergency\u00a0in 2019, has already reduced carbon emissions by\u00a040% since 2005.
