In the middle of the small area there is burnt debris and cardboard in a pile. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 bGQwLJ\"\/>BBC Images<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners want Turbo Island to be granted village green status<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">A small piece of land in Bristol known for being a place for social gatherings as well as attracting crime is to be the subject of a public inquiry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Campaigners applied to Bristol City Council to protect Turbo Island in Stokes Croft as a village green, but questions were raised about whether its activities &#8211; including impromptu parties &#8211; make it qualify for the status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Avon and Somerset Police objected the plans over the &#8220;risk posed to the local community&#8221;, while the National Grid, which has a substation there, said altering the land would &#8220;hamper&#8221; the electricity network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The council will hire a barrister to chair a two-day inquiry to explore the options for the site&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Village green applications are usually granted to protect small plots of land from developers wishing to build there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Sites protected by the status are then open for public access to allow for recreational activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Campaigners from the People&#8217;s Republic of Stokes Croft <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cr7enpzpgx3o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">want to &#8220;save&#8221; Turbo Island<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">They said the area served as a &#8220;vital&#8221; meeting point for members of the community, particularly homeless people, for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">In evidence statements submitted earlier in 2025, one campaigner said the site &#8220;radiates deep tolerance, acceptance and understanding&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Crime every other day&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">But Turbo Island has been the scene of <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-bristol-62067093\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">numerous criminal incidents<\/a> in recent times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Figures from Avon and Somerset Police showed 21 crimes were reported on the site in August &#8211; eight of which were violent and sexual offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The force&#8217;s figures from September 2024 to August showed 185 crimes were reported &#8211; an average of one crime every other day, according to the<a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/lnp\/ldrs\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\"> Local Democracy Reporting Service.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758818896_811_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hagXkB hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/74958760-a080-11f0-b741-177e3e2c2fc7.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A piece of land located in a highstreet, with a graffitied sign on the wall which says 'TURBO ISLAND' and a billboard in front of it.
