{"id":472462,"date":"2025-10-04T01:24:24","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T01:24:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/472462\/"},"modified":"2025-10-04T01:24:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T01:24:24","slug":"stormont-department-spends-more-than-4-million-on-social-media-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/472462\/","title":{"rendered":"Stormont department spends more than \u00a34 million on social media \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/department-for-the-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/department-for-the-economy\">Department for the Economy<\/a> and its arm\u2019s-length bodies have spent more than \u00a34 million on social media ads and subscriptions over the past five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The latest figures show that the total spend on social media advertising was \u00a34.3 million during the time period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The statistics show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/tourism-northern-ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/tourism-northern-ireland\">Tourism NI<\/a> also spent a substantial amount on social media ads over the same period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The body, which operates eight social media accounts, spent at least \u00a31.9 million on the advertising, although it is understood that the total figure tops this as only partial data is available for 2022.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/politicalnews\/2017\/06\/03\/news\/bbc-clarify-ma-irti-n-o-muilleoir-claims-about-emma-little-pengelly-s-father-1043974\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"BBC clarify M&#xE1;irt&#xED;n &#xD3; Muilleoir claims about Emma Little Pengelly's father \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/5G4SRZZ6URJSXFO7DYBDSY7OLQ.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/invest-ni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/invest-ni\">Invest NI<\/a> spent \u00a31.67 million in total on social media ads since 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The body also spent over \u00a39,000 on subscriptions to the social media platform X in 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Consumer Council of Northern Ireland\u2019s social media ad spend was \u00a352,542 over the past five years, according to the figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland\u2019s social media ad spend rose totalled at \u00a366,141.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Social media spend between 2020 and 2025\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/WVR7ORPF5FD27OCOTNSWVGQPRE.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"294\"\/>Social media spend between 2020 and 2025 <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The figures for the Department for the Economy itself were also significant, according to the response given to an Assembly Question by DUP MLA Diane Dodds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Across the five-year timeframe, the Department for the Economy itself spent a total of \u00a3307,731 on advertising across social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, and Linkedin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Of the remaining arm\u2019s-length bodies, the north\u2019s regional colleges including Belfast Met spent a total of \u00a3317,730 on social media advertising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a statement to the Irish News, UUP MLA Diana Armstrong said that while social media plays a vital role in promoting investment and tourism, bodies must always ensure that money is spent widely and effectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhen it comes to public spending, accountability is key, and advertising carried out by departments and arm\u2019s-length bodies is no exception,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe must always be mindful that this is public money.
