A man has died following an alleged \u2018attack\u2019 at a Birmingham<\/a> nightclub.<\/p>\n

The incident, described by police as a \u2018serious assault\u2019, took place at the Sebene Bar in Lower Tower Street in Hockley<\/a> on Friday, September 26.<\/p>\n

A 33-year-old man suffered \u2018serious injuries\u2019 at the venue shortly before 12.30pm.<\/p>\n

The man died three days later on Monday evening (September 29).<\/p>\n

Now two men have been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.<\/p>\n

Simon Gerbrengus, aged 43, from Anderson Road in Erdington<\/a>, and Bibi Gilzgi, aged 30, of no fixed address, both appeared at Birmingham Magistrates\u2019 Court on Monday (September 29) morning before the victim had died.<\/p>\n

They have both been remanded in custody to next appear at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, October 27, where the charges could be revised.<\/p>\n

A further 29-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.<\/p>\n

Sebene is listed as a \u2018premier dance club\u2019, with its name inspired by \u2018the lively and energetic African dance style\u2019, on its website<\/p>\n

West Midlands Police<\/a> raised licensing concerns with Birmingham City Council<\/a> following the \u2018serious assault\u2019 at the premises.<\/p>\n

Police said: \u201cThe premises were in breach of their premises licence at the time of the assault.<\/p>\n

And the council\u2019s licensing sub-committee C held a summary review on Friday (October 3).<\/p>\n

The committee decided to suspend the venue\u2019s licence, held by Sebene Limited, and to remove Mr Desbele Welday as the designated premises supervisor, pending a full review which will take place within 28 days.<\/p>\n

It said: \u201cThe sub-committee determined that the cause of the serious crime originated from a style of management which had been incapable of upholding the licensing objectives.<\/p>\n

\u201cParticularly the prevention of crime and disorder, such that there was a very high risk that further serious crime could arise at the premises pending the full summary review hearing in 28 days\u2019 time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of note, no one from the club attended the meeting but the committee was told the \u2018licence had been surrendered\u2019.<\/p>\n

The police said it had \u2018had little confidence in those at the premises to operate safely or responsibly\u2019.<\/p>\n

And \u2018the incident would not have happened if the licence holder company had been operating responsibly, and in accordance with its licence\u2019.<\/p>\n

In its interim steps decision the licensing sub-committee said: \u201cThe sub-committee determined that the causes of the serious crime appeared to originate from the management failings at the premises.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sub-committee was not confident that the premises was being operated to a satisfactory standard, and was not prepared to take any risks whatsoever regarding the potential for further serious crime.<\/p>\n
