{"id":474539,"date":"2025-10-04T22:41:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T22:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/474539\/"},"modified":"2025-10-04T22:41:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T22:41:11","slug":"first-scottish-activist-on-global-sumud-flotilla-deported-by-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/474539\/","title":{"rendered":"First Scottish activist on Global Sumud Flotilla deported by Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Margaret Pacetta, 70, from Glasgow, is the first of four Scots to be released.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She was one of nine UK nationals to be deported on Saturday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25517677.scottish-flotilla-activist-imprisoned-israel-treated-aggressively\/?ref=ed_recent?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish flotilla activist imprisoned by Israel &#8216;treated aggressively&#8217;<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Pacetta arrived in Istanbul Airport on Saturday afternoon along with 136 other activists who were part of the flotilla, which was sailing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/topics\/Gaza\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a> in the hopes of delivering much-needed humanitarian aid.\n<\/p>\n<p>  <strong>The 9 British Global Sumud Flotilla participants deported by Israel:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Margaret Ann Pacetta\n  <\/li>\n<li>Kieran Andrieu\n  <\/li>\n<li>Sarah Wilkinson\n  <\/li>\n<li>Hussain Sijad\n  <\/li>\n<li>Ewa Maria Jasiewicz\n  <\/li>\n<li>Husamettin Eyupoglu\n  <\/li>\n<li>Aaron White\n  <\/li>\n<li>Francis Jane Cumings\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n  Pacetta has been involved in the pro-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/topics\/palestine\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palestine<\/a> movement for more than two decades, helping to run the Glasgow Palestine Human Rights Campaign stall on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowtimes.co.uk\/topics\/buchanan-street\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buchanan Street<\/a> every weekend.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She has a lifetime ban from Israel as a result of her activism, and was once shot in the West Bank after Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd with rubber bullets.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25514291.we-know-nothing-families-fear-scottish-flotilla-activists-detained-israel\/?ref=ed_recent?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;We know nothing&#8217;: Families fear for Scottish flotilla activists detained by Israel<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25492818.two-scots-join-global-movement-sailing-gaza-deliver-aid\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travelling on the Omar Al Mokhtar Flotilla along with Yvonne Ridley<\/a> , a journalist and founding member of the Alba Party based in Scotland.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Omar Al Mokhtar set sail from Libya and eventually joined the Global Sumud Flotilla.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Overnight on Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25507540.global-sumud-flotilla-intercepted-israel\/?ref=ed_direct?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israeli forces intercepted the convoy in international waters<\/a> , detaining nearly 500 people and taking them to Israel, where they have been imprisoned while awaiting deportation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The National told earlier on Saturday how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25517677.scottish-global-sumud-flotilla-activist-aggressively-israeli-jail\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ridley is being subject to &#8220;aggressive&#8221; and &#8220;intimidating&#8221; treatment<\/a> while being held in Israeli prison, while she has also gone on hunger strike in protest.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  After landing in Istanbul, Pacetta said her experience on the flotilla had been &#8220;fantastic&#8221; and &#8220;brilliant&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  But she also spoke of her &#8220;awful&#8221; experience inside the notorious Ketziot prison, located in the Negev desert in southern Israel, where human rights abuses have been well documented.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>\n    \ud83d\udea8 Margaret Pacetta is the first Scottish activist taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla to be deported by Israel<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s arrived in Istanbul &amp; No food, no water.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;My broken leg, the girl said to me, &#8216;oh, what happened to your leg?&#8217;. I said it&#8217;s broke, and she slammed a metal door on it and went, &#8216;sorry&#8217;. Horrible, horrible.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A report published last year by Israeli human rights group B&#8217;Tselem, titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.btselem.org\/publications\/202408_welcome_to_hell?ref=ed_direct?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;Welcome to Hell&#8221;<\/a>, highlighted the cases of 12 Palestinians held at the Ketziot prison, citing a lack of food and water, severe beatings and incidents of sexual abuse.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25517557.israel-accused-sowing-division-uk-inviting-tommy-robinson\/?ref=ed_latest?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel accused of \u2018sowing division\u2019 in UK by inviting Tommy Robinson<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Far-right Israeli national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir was filmed visiting the jail on Friday, where he had repeatedly said the flotilla activists should be treated as &#8220;terrorists&#8221; and called for them to be imprisoned for &#8220;a few months [&#8230;] so that they get used to the smell of the terrorist wing&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  While Pacetta prepares to head back to the UK, there are three other Scots who are still being held by Israel \u2013 Ridley, Sid Khan and Jim Hickey.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It is understood all activists are being held in the Ketziot prison.
