Netflix’s new series about the Guinness empire <\/a>is already proving a global hit. Set in 19th-century Dublin and New York, House of Guinness follows the aftermath of the death of brewery mogul, Sir Benjamin Guinness, and the fate of his four adult children.<\/p>\n

In fact a castle in North Wales plays a significant role. Penrhyn Castle, a neo-Norman castle on the outskirts of Bangor<\/a> was used as the backdrop for Ashford Castle, the Irish home of the Guinness family. in House of Guinness.<\/p>\n

Built for the Pennant family and completed in 1840, Penrhyn Castle shares many similarities with Ashford Castle, as both were constructed to appear older than they are by industrialists who amassed wealth during the Victorian era.<\/p>\n

When deciding to film the series, the team realised quite quickly they wouldn’t be able to film in Dublin. The Executive Producer for House of Guiness, Karen Wilson said: “We travelled the length and breadth of Ireland and the UK, ending up in the North West of England, which had stately homes and Dublin-style streets \u2014 everything we needed. Even within the North West, we had to move around more than a TV production usually would.<\/p>\n

“But places like Manchester, Liverpool, North Wales, and Yorkshire gave us what we needed. I really hope we\u2019ve done Dublin justice.”<\/p>\n

Visitors can explore the castle grounds, which are managed by the National Trust Cymru. They have a nature walk and 60 acres of garden and woodland surrounding with views of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdonia) as well as the Great Orme and Puffin Island.<\/p>\n

The series explores wealth, class disparities and conflict, similar to the themes we explore here at Penrhyn. We can\u2019t wait to watch it and spot Penrhyn in the background.”<\/p>\n
