The council promises to produce a programme of events on a cycling theme around the Grand Depart of Tour de France which Edinburgh will host in 2027.<\/p>\n

As one of the benefits of holding the event it is hoped to promote more participation in cycling \u2013 by providing bike parking and by promoting cycle routes in Edinburgh. In addition, it is known that past events have had significant economic impact. In Yorkshire the economic benefit to the area was an estimated \u00a3131 million, and in Edinburgh the benefits are expected to be even higher with increased tourism, hospitality revenues and new commercial partnerships.<\/p>\n

A Community Engagement Officer will be appointed who will lead on partnerships and coordinating events will schools, community groups and local organisations. Town Hall style meetings will be held in the coming months when ideas and initiatives will be outlined and explored.<\/p>\n

Culture and Communities Convener Margaret Graham said: \u201cBroadcast live in over 150 countries and attracting millions of roadside spectators, the Tour de France Grand D\u00e9part presents a unique opportunity to showcase Edinburgh on a global stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the world\u2019s largest annual sporting event, it\u2019s also a chance to boost our economy, improve our health and wellbeing, and accelerate progress towards our active travel goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe programme agreed at Committee will make sure we\u2019re able to reap the rewards and ensure that the legacy of the Tour de France is one of lasting positive change for our residents and visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n
