{"id":476407,"date":"2025-10-05T18:16:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T18:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/476407\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T18:16:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T18:16:15","slug":"trump-commerce-secretary-howard-lutnick-calls-epstein-a-blackmailer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/476407\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump commerce secretary Howard Lutnick calls Epstein a &#8216;blackmailer&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick&#8217;s suggestion that Jeffrey Epstein had blackmailed powerful men runs against Justice Department and FBI denials that Epstein had compromising material.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/86319949007-2235796026.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s commerce secretary calls Jeffrey Epstein &#8216;greatest blackmailer\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick&#8217;s suggestion that Jeffrey Epstein had blackmailed powerful men runs against Justice Department and FBI denials that Epstein had compromising material.<\/p>\n<p>For months, President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" data-autotag=\"26f031d1-9924-4f10-b4e6-019d076113d5\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> has pleaded with his supporters to move on from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/25\/trump-jeffrey-epstein-friendship-conspiracy\/85307396007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> controversy \u2212 calling it a &#8220;Democratic hoax\u201d \u2212 even as he faces growing calls from Congress and many in his own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/09\/04\/marjorie-taylor-greene-epstein-files-discharge-petition-trump\/85969506007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MAGA base<\/a> for more disclosure on the jet-setting sex offender.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump&#8217;s fellow billionaire and Commerce secretary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/02\/19\/billionaire-howard-lutnick-confirmed-as-commerce-secretary\/78633310007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Howard Lutnick<\/a>, apparently didn&#8217;t get the memo.<\/p>\n<p>Lutnick held forth on a recent podcast about how he found Epstein, who was a close friend of Trump&#8217;s for more than a decade, to be \u201cgross&#8221; and believed he was a &#8220;blackmailer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/25\/trump-jeffrey-epstein-friendship-conspiracy\/85307396007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How Trump and &#8216;terrific guy&#8217; Jeffrey Epstein&#8217;s party boy friendship finally ended<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was gross,\u201d said Lutnick, in a Oct.1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=x8_s4Z2TQAE&amp;list=PLHY8kGYAi5RLEf4OwozbCSlyF3wJoqcOB&amp;index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">podcast interview <\/a>with New York Post\u2019s Miranda Devine. Lutnick described Epstein as the &#8220;greatest blackmailer ever&#8221; and suggested he had used compromising videos of prominent men to get a 2008 sweetheart deal in Florida amid a child prostitution investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/24\/ghislaine-maxwell-jeffrey-epstein-what-to-know\/85325558007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Who is Ghislaine Maxwell? DOJ turns to Jeffrey Epstein&#8217;s ex-partner.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those comments sharply differ from a memo released by the Justice Department and FBI in July which said that there was no &#8220;credible evidence found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/media\/1407001\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that Epstein blackmailed prominent individuals<\/a>&#8221; or that he kept an &#8220;incriminating client list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House and the Commerce Department didn&#8217;t immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The mansion next door<\/p>\n<p>Lutnick, a former chairman of finance giant Cantor Fitzgerald, was once Epstein\u2019s next-door neighbor. Their ritzy Upper East Side townhouses shared a wall.<\/p>\n<p>But Lutnick said his very first meeting with Epstein, who died by suicide in a Manhattan jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, left the future Cabinet secretary with a distinctly negative impression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">More: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/07\/30\/ghislaine-maxwell-jeffrey-epstein-donald-trump-pardon\/85403177007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">She\u2019s inmate No. 02879-509 in Florida. But once again, Ghislaine Maxwell is holding court<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;right kind of massage&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, after Lutnick and his wife, Allison, had just moved into their newly renovated home, Epstein sent an assistant to invite the couple over for coffee.<\/p>\n<p>After giving them a tour of the \u201cbig living room,\u201d he led them to a room with double doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed it\u2019s the dining room,\u201d said Lutnick. \u201cAnd he opens the doors and there\u2019s a massage table in the middle of the room. And candles all around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lutnick said he then asked Epstein how often he got massages to warrant a table in the middle of the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then he says, \u2018Every day,\u2019\u201d recalled Lutnick. \u201cAnd then, he like gets, like, weirdly close to me. And he says, \u2018And the right kind of massage.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon after the comment, Lutnick said, he and his wife abruptly left Epstein\u2019s mansion.<\/p>\n<p>In the \u201csix to eight steps\u201d it took for them to reach their residence, Lutnick said, the couple decided that he would \u201cnever be in the room with him socially, for business, or even philanthropy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Epstein has been accused of luring and grooming numerous victims, including underage girls, for sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that guy was there, I wasn\u2019t going because he\u2019s gross,\u201d Lutnick said.<\/p>\n<p>Devine asked how other prominent men could have associated with Epstein when Lutnick could immediately sense that he was a \u201cpervert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid they see it and ignore it?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. They participated,\u201d responded Lutnick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what his M.O. was,\u201d he said. &#8220;You know, &#8216;get a massage, get a massage.&#8217; And what happened in that massage room, I assume, was on video. This guy was the greatest blackmailer ever. Blackmail people. That\u2019s how he had money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight committee, said on social media that Lutnick&#8217;s comments showed the need for further disclosures. &#8220;Secretary Lutnick spelled out what we already know: that some of the most powerful men across the country and world were involved in Epstein\u2019s crimes,&#8221; Garcia wrote. &#8220;We won\u2019t stop until we get the full truth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Epstein scandal dogs Trump<\/p>\n<p>Trump and Epstein were friends through the 1990s and fell out in 2003 in a dispute over a Palm Beach estate, according to several accounts. Trump has said he broke with Epstein because the financier had poached staff members from his Mar-a-Lago estate.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee released pages from a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/18\/trump-sues-wsj-rupert-murdoch-slander\/85282651007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">birthday book<\/a>\u201d given to Epstein on his 50th birthday with celebratory letters from his influential friends including former President Bill Clinton and one allegedly from Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s purported message, which he denies writing, was written inside the outline of a naked woman.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8\ud83d\udea8HERE IT IS: We got Trump\u2019s birthday note to Jeffrey Epstein that the President said doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>Trump talks about a \u201cwonderful secret\u201d the two of them shared. Release the files! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/k2Mq8Hu3LY\">pic.twitter.com\/k2Mq8Hu3LY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Oversight Dems (@OversightDems) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OversightDems\/status\/1965125560016994708?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 8, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The president and his supporters have worked furiously to tamp down a backlash over the Justice Department and FBI&#8217;s July statement that there was no Epstein &#8220;client list.&#8221; Trump and many of his backers, including FBI Director Kash Patel and Vice President JD Vance, had previously stoked conspiracies that the Biden administration was protecting a cabal of child abusers connected to Epstein.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 2, after the podcast aired, Garcia <a href=\"https:\/\/oversightdemocrats.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/democrats-oversight.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2025-10-02-garcia-to-lutnick-re-epstein.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent a letter<\/a> to Lutnick asking him to \u201ccooperate\u201d in their investigation into possible Epstein co-conspirators.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the interest of justice for the victims of Jeffrey Epstein and his enablers, and given your firsthand interactions with and knowledge of Mr. Epstein, we demand that you cooperate with the Committee\u2019s investigation by sitting for a transcribed interview with Committee staff,&#8221; Garcia wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Delaying a House vote on Epstein files<\/p>\n<p>In Congress, a bipartisan measure backed by Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, and Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/DischargePetition\/2025090209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">217 signatures from House members<\/a>\u00a0calling for U.S. Attorney General\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/pam-bondi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pam Bondi<\/a>\u00a0to release the Department of Justice&#8217;s files on Epstein.\u00a0One more vote is needed to force a House vote over the resistance of Speaker Mike Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have accused Speaker Johnson of delaying the swearing-in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/arizona\/2025\/09\/27\/adelita-grijalva-swearing-in\/86373002007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of Democratic Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva<\/a>, who won a special election in Arizona \u2212 and whose vote could be instrumental in making the Epstein records public.<\/p>\n<p>In the podcast interview, Lutnick speculated that Epstein had managed to secure a controversial\u00a02008 plea deal in exchange for videos he possessed. The deal allowed him to avoid federal sex trafficking charges.<\/p>\n<p>Epstein instead pleaded guilty to lesser charges of soliciting a minor for prostitution in Florida state court and was required to register as a sex offender. He received an 18-month sentence and was permitted to go on \u201cwork release\u201d to his office while in custody.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s association with Epstein has dogged him since his first term in office.
