{"id":476413,"date":"2025-10-05T18:19:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T18:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/476413\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T18:19:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T18:19:12","slug":"new-french-pm-lecornu-unveils-government-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/476413\/","title":{"rendered":"New French PM Lecornu unveils government \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the whole there are few fresh faces in Lecornu&#8217;s government, a sign that the political forces represented in Macron&#8217;s successive administrations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/french-pm-sebastien-lecornu-tries-to-save-skin-ruling-out-constitutional-backdoor\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/french-pm-sebastien-lecornu-tries-to-save-skin-ruling-out-constitutional-backdoor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remain broadly the same<\/a>, despite Lecornu&#8217;s being the French president&#8217;s fifth prime minister in less than two years.<\/p>\n<p>Many ministers from Macron&#8217;s centrist camp kept their posts, including Education Minister Elisabeth Borne and Overseas Territory Minister Manuel Valls \u2014\u00a0both former prime ministers themselves. Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot, Justice Minister G\u00e9rald Darmanin and Budget Minister Am\u00e9lie de Montchalin all stayed in post as well.<\/p>\n<p>Bruno Retailleau, the hardline leader of the conservative Les R\u00e9publicains, will remain as interior minister. Fellow conservatives Annie Genevard and Rachida Dati will stay on as agriculture and culture ministers, respectfully.<\/p>\n<p>The 39-year-old Lecornu, a close Macron ally, has been handed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/new-french-pm-kicks-off-tenure-distancing-himself-from-predecessor-sebastien-lecornu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/new-french-pm-kicks-off-tenure-distancing-himself-from-predecessor-sebastien-lecornu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the arduous task<\/a> of trying to negotiate a slimmed-down budget after his predecessor, Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou, was toppled in a no-confidence vote last month.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Lecornu\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pfseb726.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me\/L0\/https:%2F%2Fwww.politico.eu%2Farticle%2Ffrench-pm-sebastien-lecornu-tries-to-save-skin-ruling-out-constitutional-backdoor%2F\/1\/01020199a92a972e-2a70bfe1-3f2a-4d86-a21b-666ac6647db6-000000\/WZV-WIhfsDdUHksyG5s8956E4YA=446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offered a significant concession<\/a>\u00a0to opposition parties by promising not to use a controversial constitutional maneuver that allows the government to pass legislation without a vote.<\/p>\n<p>The former armed forces minister has signaled he is ready to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/french-pm-sebastien-lecornu-tries-to-save-skin-ruling-out-constitutional-backdoor\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/french-pm-sebastien-lecornu-tries-to-save-skin-ruling-out-constitutional-backdoor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some major budgetary concessions<\/a> to the left-wing socialist party to secure their support.
