Christine Lagarde played down suggestions that she may have ambitions to become the next French president.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it is a terrible job – and I think you have to be sort of wired for that, and I don\u2019t think it is my case, really,\u201d the European Central Bank chief told the College Leaders in Finance podcast when asked about the option of taking that job.<\/p>\n
Lagarde\u2019s non-renewable eight-year term in Frankfurt runs through until October 2027. Emmanuel Macron\u2019s stint as French president ends the same year, albeit several months earlier.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean that I don\u2019t want to serve my country, it doesn\u2019t mean that I don\u2019t want to serve Europe, it doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m going to be selfish the day when I step down, but I think it\u2019s a gruelling job for which you have to be a bit crazy to want to do it,\u201d she said in the interview recorded on Thursday and broadcast on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Being asked about her interest in France\u2019s top political job is \u201cvery flattering, it shows that people have trust in me,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s very nice, it\u2019s very flattering, but I have to know myself well enough, and I have to be attentive to my limitations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked about her post-ECB plans, she stayed vague.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are so many other things I want to do,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t think I would call it retirement. But it might be different, it might be a bit more about what I really care about, what I really like. But I don\u2019t see myself putting my feet up, watching television, or doing some traveling around for no particular purpose – I don\u2019t think it would work for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, she does see having \u201cmore time for myself,\u201d and \u201cfor the grandchildren, and the family I don\u2019t see enough,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
