{"id":476943,"date":"2025-10-05T23:54:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T23:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/476943\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T23:54:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T23:54:11","slug":"conservatives-to-set-out-plan-for-47bn-of-cuts-to-public-spending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/476943\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservatives to set out plan for \u00a347bn of cuts to public spending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Earlier this year, the Labour government sought to cut nearly \u00a35bn from the disability and health-related benefits bill but had to backtrack after a rebellion by its own MPs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ckg3jl0ylkyo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has suggested<\/a> the government will return to the issue, telling the BBC that changes to the welfare system &#8220;must happen&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Last year, the Office for Budget Responsibility <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/crewng29zgno\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forecast<\/a> that total spending on health and disability benefits would rise from \u00a364.7bn in 2023-24 to \u00a3100.7bn in 2029-30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Tories argue they can reduce the bill by reviewing exemptions for the Household Benefit Cap, limiting the VAT subsidy for Motability &#8211; which allows claimants to lease vehicles &#8211; and changing obligations for job-seekers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It says it would stop claims for people suffering from &#8220;low-level health&#8221; mental health problems arguing that &#8220;what is really needed is treatment and support, not cash&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It also says it would keep in place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ce80ljn27vpo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the two-child benefit cap,<\/a> which prevents households on universal or child tax credit from receiving payments for a third or subsequent child born after April 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Labour government has been under pressure to remove the cap, with many of its backbenchers arguing the limit has increased the number of children in poverty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Resolution Foundation says axing the cap would lift 470,000 children out of poverty and would cost around \u00a33.5bn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Badenoch has previously defended the cap <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/c8e6jy5xe9gt?page=2\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a> it was a matter of &#8220;fairness&#8221;
