Queen Camilla has released a rare personal message in tribute to her friend Dame Jilly Cooper, who has died at the age of 88. The message, issued by Buckingham Palace this morning, honored the best-selling author\u2019s life and legacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so saddened to learn of Dame Jilly\u2019s death last night,\u201d Camilla wrote in the message signed Camilla R, standing for Regina which is Latin for Queen. \u201cVery few writers get to be a legend in their own lifetime but Jilly was one, creating a whole new genre of literature and making it her own through a career that spanned over five decades.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referencing their friendship, the Queen wrote, \u201cIn person she was a wonderfully witty and compassionate friend to me and so many\u2014and it was a particular pleasure to see her just a few weeks ago at my Queen\u2019s Reading Room Festival where she was, as ever, a star of the show. I join my husband The King in sending our thoughts and sympathies to all her family. And may her hereafter be filled with impossibly handsome men and devoted dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Queen Camilla saw Dame Jilly last month at her Queen\u2019s Reading Room Festival at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. The writer was awarded a damehood last year in an investiture carried out by King Charles.<\/p>\n

The author\u2019s death following a fall was announced this morning. Her children Felix and Emily told the BBC<\/a> in a statement that her death was \u201ca complete shock,\u201d adding, \u201cWe are so proud of everything she achieved in her life and can’t begin to imagine life without her infectious smile and laughter all around us.”<\/p>\n

The author of 18 novels, Jilly Cooper\u2019s 1988 book Rivals had recently been turned into a hugely successful TV show. She has moved in Queen Camilla\u2019s social circle for many years. Last year, Jilly said<\/a> that Rivals character Rupert Campbell-Black was based on Camilla\u2019s ex-husband Andrew Parker Bowles<\/a>.<\/p>\n
