{"id":478553,"date":"2025-10-06T17:16:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T17:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/478553\/"},"modified":"2025-10-06T17:16:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T17:16:11","slug":"35-of-eu-regions-met-the-eus-higher-education-target-news-articles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/478553\/","title":{"rendered":"35% of EU regions met the EU\u2019s higher education target &#8211; News articles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">The <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:European_Union_(EU)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a>-wide target states that by 2030, at least 45% of young people in the EU aged 25 to 34 years should have attained a <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:International_standard_classification_of_education_(ISCED)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tertiary level of education<\/a> (<a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=International_Standard_Classification_of_Education_(ISCED)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISCED levels 5-8<\/a>). In 2024, 44.2% of this age group had reached tertiary education level. Of the 242 regions classified at level 2 of the <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Nomenclature_of_territorial_units_for_statistics_(NUTS)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nomenclature of territorial units for statistics<\/a> (NUTS 2) with available data, 84 regions had already reached or surpassed the EU target (as shown by the 3 shades of teal in the map).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">At the top end of the distribution, 25 regions reported that at least 57.5% of people aged 25 to 34 years had attained a tertiary level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">This group included several regions and economic hubs marked by high-quality universities and focusing on research and innovation. It comprised:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ecl-unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"ecl-unordered-list__item\">the capital regions of Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, France, Lithuania, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and Sweden\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"ecl-unordered-list__item\">6 additional regions from Spain, clustered in the north (with specialisations in, among other activities, advanced manufacturing and automotive industries)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"ecl-unordered-list__item\">both remaining regions of Ireland (pharmaceuticals, life sciences and electronics)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"ecl-unordered-list__item\">Utrecht and Groningen in the Netherlands (high-tech industries and green technologies)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"ecl-unordered-list__item\">Prov. Brabant Wallon in Belgium (knowledge-intensive industries)<\/li>\n<li class=\"ecl-unordered-list__item\">Midi-Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es in France (aerospace)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"ecl-unordered-list__item\">Cyprus and Luxembourg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-align-center ecl-u-type-paragraph\">Source dataset: <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/databrowser\/bookmark\/723e440c-e7bf-4ce7-8d43-3a8e4896338f?lang=en&amp;createdAt=2025-09-25T09:53:40Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">edat_lfse_04<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">On the other end of the scale, 24 regions registered fewer than 26.5% of people aged 25 to 34 years as having attained a tertiary level of education (as shown by the darkest shade of gold in the map). These regions were primarily rural or geographically remote\/isolated, often characterised by relatively large agricultural sectors and limited opportunities for highly skilled employment.
