{"id":478991,"date":"2025-10-06T21:48:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T21:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/478991\/"},"modified":"2025-10-06T21:48:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T21:48:19","slug":"mapping-a-europe-no-longer-at-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/478991\/","title":{"rendered":"Mapping a Europe \u2018No Longer at Peace\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The start of what Denmark\u2019s prime minister has termed a Kremlin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4c03d08e-4a05-4d98-8d09-2927c74a211a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hybrid war<\/a>, began on September 9 with an <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/09\/europe\/poland-scramble-jets-russian-drone-reports-intl-hnk-ml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attack<\/a> by more than 20 Russian military drones on Poland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CEPA research shows that since then, northern European NATO member states have registered at least another 41 incidents from Norway to Denmark, and Belgium to the Baltic states. Not all these incidents can be traced back to Russia (and some initially appear innocuous), but many appear considered and malign. The incursions are now occurring almost daily and include swarms of drones flying <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-drones-jets-russia-incursions-3ae58e3286cd88e893908b17b1e82912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in formation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most concentrated elements of the campaign are aimed at those countries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kielinstitut.de\/topics\/war-against-ukraine\/ukraine-support-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">foremost<\/a> in supporting Ukraine, sharply increasing defense spending, and demanding robust NATO action against the Kremlin \u2014 Poland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2025\/06\/26\/germany-plans-to-double-its-defense-spending-within-five-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Germany<\/a>, Denmark, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cepa.org\/article\/kremlin-snarls-as-norway-surges-ukraine-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Norway<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This list also covers incidents in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The list is based on publicly available information and is not exhaustive. Reports of drone sightings are not in themselves evidence of hostile activity, and police in several countries note that such observations are often unrelated to security concerns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, recent observations have drawn increased attention from NATO countries, as they appear to follow a pattern of disrupting airports, approaching military facilities, and critical infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Germany\u2019s Chancellor Friedrich Merz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe-no-longer-peace-with-russia-says-germanys-merz-2025-09-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> on September 29: \u201cLet me put it in a sentence that may be a little shocking at first glance\u2026 we are not at war, but we are no longer at peace [with Russia] either.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Heine Sandvik Brekke is an\u202fEditorial Intern at CEPA.
