Edinburgh firefighters<\/a> locked down North Bridge on Tuesday morning after a construction cabin caught fire.<\/p>\n

The incident, which saw traffic diverted from the busy city centre road, took place at around 7.44am on Tuesday, October 7 and saw four appliances in attendance.<\/p>\n

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service<\/a> spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.44am on Tuesday, 7 October, to reports of a fire on Princes Street, Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

\u201cOperations Control mobilised three appliances and a high-reach vehicle to the scene, where firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a construction cabin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were no reported casualties and crews left the scene at approximately 9am after ensuring the area was made safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The road closure saw buses diverted and restoration works on the bridge halted during the morning commute.<\/p>\n

One passerby said: “I was on the bus coming along Nicolson Street and suddenly the driver got out and told everyone we would be diverting as the bridge was closed.<\/p>\n

“Lots of people got up and got off then I noticed all the buses coming from Chambers Street.<\/p>\n

“Traffic was pretty chaotic on George IV Bridge and down The Mound but I noticed blue lights on North Bridge and what looked like at least two fire engines. My friend told me all the workers on the bridge were standing in a group together.”<\/p>\n

While another added: “Firefighters were blocking both ends of the bridge – there was a cordon going up. The tall ladder appliance was at the Princes Street end and others at the top.<\/p>\n

“It was chaos at that time of the morning with drivers turning around to try other routes.<\/p>\n

“It wasn’t immediately clear what was going on but the workies from the bridge project had left the site and were congregated down near Princes Street.”<\/p>\n

It is understood the road has now been reopened with diversions no longer in place.<\/p>\n
