Every year, millions flock every year   to the islands of Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera to wander whitewashed towns, soak up pristine beaches, embrace the laidback vibes \u2014 and, for some, indulge in a bit of partying.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt00063b6nb59x4xa8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A little farther south lies another Spanish island that captures much of this Mediterranean magic while remaining almost entirely unknown.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt00073b6ne766smd0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Look at a map of Spain, zoom in on its southeast corner and, if you pay attention, you\u2019ll spot an elongated speck of land just off the city of Alicante.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt00083b6n59n85iel@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The flat, tiny island of Nueva Tabarca stretches 1,800 meters \u2014 just over a mile \u2014 and spans only 400 meters at its widest point. Around 50 people live on the island year-round, making it Spain\u2019s smallest permanently inhabited island.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt00093b6np5t98uca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What Tabarca lacks in size, it more than makes up for in natural and cultural heritage. Its insularity has shielded it from the reckless overdevelopment that has scarred much of the nearby Costa Blanca.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt000a3b6n0ngbajf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet Tabarca is far from remote. Officially part of Alicante, it lies just a couple of miles offshore. Several times a day, glass-bottomed ferries shuttle visitors across the narrow stretch of water from the mainland fishing port of Santa Pola.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt000b3b6nbmrr2te6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even this minimal degree of geographical separation has given Tabarca a personality all its own.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt000c3b6n01rn0240@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Its distinct character owes much to a remarkable 18th century. The island\u2019s inhabitants trace their roots not to nearby shores but hundreds of miles away \u2014 in a historical saga connecting Tabarca to Italy and North Africa.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt000d3b6naqs84pdb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Nueva in its name hints at the story.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt000e3b6njk7llmjn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Between 1500 and 1800, red coral from what was then the island of Tabarka, on Tunisia\u2019s northern coast, was a prized commodity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt000f3b6n8bqacjvu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the 16th century, the Genoese Lomellini family secured a concession from the local rulers to harvest coral there. By the mid-18th century, the settlement numbered around 2,000, most of Genoese origin.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt000g3b6nh627q340@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then the Ottoman Bey of Tunis, ruler of what is present day Tunisia, had other plans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axt000h3b6nmmn7nfh6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 1741, his forces overran Tabarka, enslaving many residents and sending shockwaves throughout the western Mediterranean. Kings of Spain and Sardinia offered sanctuary to those who escaped and paid ransoms to free those still captive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000i3b6nf30n1b3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those who reached Spain were offered a place to rebuild their lives \u2014 on a small, barren island. Then known as Illa Plana, or flat island, it was renamed Nueva Tabarca in remembrance of their previous home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000j3b6njgagnmjm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new settlement wasn\u2019t improvised. In line with enlightened ideas of the time, military engineers were assigned to lay out a precise urban grid which is still visible today. Broad, straight streets intersect at right angles, converging on a central square. A fortified perimeter protected the community from the Barbary pirates who regularly raided the Spanish coast.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000k3b6nexds4801@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, not all Tabarkians made it to Spain. Some found refuge in Sardinia, where King Carlo Emanuele III of Savoy resettled them on the islands of San Pietro and Sant\u2019Antioco, founding the villages of Carloforte and Calasetta. Their descendants still speak the \u201cTabarchino\u201d dialect and maintain a distinct culture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000l3b6n91e0adl1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recent years have seen efforts to reconnect the three Tabarchine communities after years apart. In 2024, some 75 representatives gathered in Pegli, near Genoa, their ancestors\u2019 home. There is even talk of nominating the Tabarchine saga for UNESCO\u2019s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000m3b6nhy3vc8b9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While that recognition remains a distant prospect, Spanish Tabarca enjoys other official protections. In 1986, it became Spain\u2019s very first marine reserve. Two-thirds of the island remains undeveloped and largely unspoiled. Its surrounding waters and adjacent rocks and islets act as a refuge for marine life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000n3b6nzmocv3er@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The urbanized third of the island has adapted to tourism, with many traditional houses converted into short-term accommodation for the growing number of tourists escaping the Costa Blanca buzz.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Island of day-trippers<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/img-3175-2.jpg\" alt=\"On the day CNN visited, cats outnumbered visitors on the island's streets.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000o3b6nsodpu1bo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The charms of Tabarca have not gone unnoticed, even beyond Spain\u2019s borders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000p3b6nmh0ujia9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mar\u00eda del Mar Valera, a Tabarca restaurateur and president of APEHA, an association of Alicante hospitality businesses, tells CNN that international visitors can make up to 80 to 90% of arrivals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000q3b6ni8y00myt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most tourists are day-trippers. Around 20 small-scale businesses cater to roughly 200 to 250 people, though business is strictly seasonal, despite the year-round mild climate. \u201cNo one comes here in winter,\u201d she adds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000s3b6nst9oqq7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Visiting on a quiet Friday in early fall, Tabarca\u2019s streets almost deserted. Cats, basking in the afternoon sun, far outnumbered humans. (A <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11350886\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> found that in 2023 there were around twice as many cats on the island as there were people). The broad and tidy streets \u2014 unusual for a Mediterranean town \u2014 amplified the sense of tranquillity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000t3b6nwmhk5x10@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A few weeks earlier, it would\u2019ve been a different picture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000u3b6n9f321qg8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAt the peak of the summer we may get six or seven thousand visitors, we may have reached 10,000 on some peak day,\u201d says Valera.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000v3b6nd697so4c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some locals complain that when the tourists leave, the island fades from view \u2014 especially when it comes to public services.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000w3b6noi24aw5u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A lack of transport options between November and March, when ferry frequencies drop drastically, is a major complaint, says Carmen Mart\u00ed, president of the Tabarca residents\u2019 association.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000x3b6noqxq45oj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is very hard to live a normal life when you can barely make it to the mainland and back on the same day,\u201d Mart\u00ed tells CNN. Some elderly residents have even left due to the difficulty in accessing regular medical care.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000y3b6nz7mrrwfn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The association is campaigning to get the island\u2019s inhabitants similar benefits to those enjoyed by residents of other Spanish islands, such as guaranteed public transport and discounted travel to the mainland.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/img-3203-2.jpg\" alt=\"The lighthouse is one of Tabarca's historic landmarks.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu000z3b6nm6gul8nl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mart\u00ed also supports the introduction of an electronic ticket system to access the island. This, she says, would also enable the local and regional governments to get an accurate idea of how many people visit the island and plan infrastructure and public services accordingly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu00103b6n5x6y7fb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Like many Mediterranean destinations, Nueva Tabarca is attempting to find the right balance between preservation and tourism. In May 2025, the city of Alicante passed new legislation seeking to further protect Tarbarca\u2019s architectural heritage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu00113b6nomluwjho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are working to preserve quite a few valuable architectural elements of value that exist on the island,\u201d Jos\u00e9 Manuel P\u00e9rez, head of municipal heritage in the city of Alicante, tells CNN. \u201cBesides the historical downtown, we are also evaluating possible future uses for the island\u2019s fort,\u201d he adds, referring to another of the island\u2019s singular structures, a fortified tower which until not very long ago housed a small military garrison.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu00123b6nnq53z8ov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fort\u2019s tower stands like a lone centinel in a half-mile stretch of scrubland on an uninhabited part of the island, a lighthouse and cemetery its only man-made companions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmggf6axu00133b6nekgqhq2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            From there, the high rises of Alicante loom on the horizon, a timely reminder that  Tabarca offers something increasingly rare in the Mediterranean: a place built to human proportions.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tabarca, Spain \u00a0\u2014\u00a0 Spain\u2019s Mediterranean islands have come to represent an ideal of lifestyle and leisure.
