Divorce leaves a lasting mark on kids, no matter how old they are when their parents get divorced. That is especially true when their divorce is big and public, like the divorce between King Charles and Princess Diana<\/a> was. And it is somewhat normal that the wounds carry over into adulthood and into new relationships. Or, at least, the lessons.<\/p>\n

The Prince of Wales<\/a> reflected on their parents\u2019 failed marriage and the lessons he\u2019s taken from that during an episode of Eugene Levy\u2019s Apple TV+ show, The Reluctant Traveler, which was released on Oct. 3.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s really important that that atmosphere is created at home. You have to have that warmth, that feeling of safety, security, love,\u201d he said about the home life he and Middleton<\/a> strive to create for their children. \u201cThat all has to be there, and that was certainly part of my childhood,\u201d William explained.<\/p>\n

However, according to him, it only \u201clasted a short period of time\u201d as his parents divorced in 1996, when William was just 14 years old. The breakup came with reports of King Charles\u2019s affair with Camilla\u00a0Parker Bowles<\/a>, whom the King went on to marry in 2005.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou take that and you learn from it and you try and make sure you don\u2019t do the same mistakes as your parent,\u201d William said on the show. \u201cI think we all try and do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prince William especially reflected on the kind of upbringing he wanted for his kids. \u201cI just want to do what\u2019s best for my children, but I know that the drama and the stress when you\u2019re small really affects you when you\u2019re older,\u201d he said, a probable reference to his own childhood and that of his brother, Prince Harry.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrowing up, I saw that with my parents. The media were so insatiable back then. It\u2019s hard to think of it now, but they were much more insatiable,\u201d William explained. \u201cThey wanted every bit of detail they could absorb, and they were in everything, literally everywhere. They would know things, they\u2019d be everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prince William even brought up his brother <\/a>during the show, saying, \u201cI hope we don\u2019t go back to some of the practices in the past, that Harry and I had to grow up in \u2014 and I\u2019ll do everything I can to make sure we don\u2019t regress in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News Digital<\/a> that the way his parents\u2019 marriage ended deeply affected William. \u201cIt was obviously difficult for William growing up, especially when the battle between his parents played out so publicly,\u201d Fitzwilliams said. \u201cAs a little boy, William was outside the bathroom when his mother was weeping inside,\u201d Fordwich added. \u201cHe would pass her tissues, saying, \u2018Please don\u2019t cry, mummy.\u2019 It was the warmth and comfort of the Middletons\u2019 stable, middle-class family life that drew him to Kate Middleton. He saw and felt the normalcy he desperately craved.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that plays into why the Prince is determined not to make the same mistakes, the royal expert said. \u201cHe is a loyal husband and devoted father, because he felt \u2014 and still feels \u2014 the impact of his parents\u2019 \u2018open\u2019 marriage and\u00a0the bitter, highly public divorce,\u201d Fordwich continued. \u201cHe rightly sees a warm, well-rounded childhood as the foundation for the monarchy\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Divorce. It affects everyone, for better or worse. Even on the next generation.<\/p>\n
