{"id":481023,"date":"2025-10-07T18:53:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T18:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/481023\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T18:53:22","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T18:53:22","slug":"eu-to-replace-passport-stamps-with-biometric-border-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/481023\/","title":{"rendered":"EU to replace passport stamps with biometric border system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"600\" class=\"picture-main-block-image\" data-nxsrc=\"https:\/\/www.ekathimerini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/NYT-airport.jpg\" alt=\"EU to replace passport stamps with biometric border system\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/NYT-airport-960x600.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>[File photo]<\/p>\n<p>The European Union is set to phase out passport stamping for non-EU travelers, replacing it with a new digital border management system known as the Entry\/Exit System (EES).<\/p>\n<p>Starting October 12, the system will begin a gradual rollout across the 29 countries of the Schengen area \u2013 including 25 EU member states, as well as Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland and Cyprus, which are EU members but are not part of the Schengen area, will continue manual passport checks.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new system, non-EU visitors entering or leaving the Schengen area will have their facial images, fingerprints and travel details recorded electronically instead of receiving a physical passport stamp. According to the European Commission, the EES will make border checks faster and more efficient while strengthening security by helping track overstays and irregular migration.<\/p>\n<p>Travelers will be required to register on arrival by answering standard border questions, creating a record valid for three years. Once enrolled, re-entry will require only biometric verification.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union expects the system to be fully operational by April 2026, with initial delays likely as border officers and travelers adapt to the technology.<\/p>\n<p>The EES is one of two major new EU border initiatives.
