Russia held its first official meeting with Taliban officials on\u00a0October 7, following its recognition of\u00a0the Afghan government and removal of\u00a0the group from its list of\u00a0terrorist organizations, The Moscow Times reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov used the occasion to\u00a0criticize Western sanctions and call for international support for the Afghanistan\u2019s postwar recovery.<\/p>\n

Speaking at\u00a0the opening of\u00a0the \u201cMoscow Format\u201d consultations on\u00a0Afghanistan, Lavrov praised the Taliban for combating the regional chapter of\u00a0the Islamic State and tackling drug trafficking, while blaming the West for a\u00a0\u201cconfrontational policy,\u201d including the continued freezing of\u00a0Afghan state assets and restrictions on\u00a0its banking system.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0call on\u00a0Western countries to\u00a0correct their course, return the assets they have seized and take responsibility for Afghanistan\u2019s reconstruction,\u201d Lavrov said.<\/p>\n

Lavrov also warned against the establishment of\u00a0foreign military bases in\u00a0Afghanistan and neighboring countries. <\/p>\n

\u201cHistory has shown us\u00a0the catastrophic consequences of\u00a0foreign military interference. We\u00a0cannot afford to\u00a0repeat these mistakes,\u201d he\u00a0said during his opening remarks.<\/p>\n

The meeting brought together Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, as\u00a0well as\u00a0officials from India, Iran, Pakistan, and five ex-Soviet Central Asian republics. <\/p>\n

Russia became the first country to\u00a0officially recognize<\/a> the Islamic Emirate of\u00a0Afghanistan in\u00a0July 2025\u00a0after removing the Taliban from its list of\u00a0terrorist organizations and accepting its ambassador to\u00a0Moscow. <\/p>\n

Last year, Russian leader Vladimir Putin referred to\u00a0the Taliban as\u00a0\u201callies in\u00a0the fight against terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Previously, it\u00a0was reported<\/a> that Lavrov said that Ukraine can only \u201cexist\u201d if\u00a0it\u00a0gives up\u00a0the territories annexed by\u00a0Moscow\u2014an ultimatum echoing Putin\u2019s reported demands to\u00a0end the\u00a0war.<\/p>\n
