but one town in the city will see more of these signs soon(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">The next Manchester town to adopt a 20mph speed limit on its residential roads has been named.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Council bosses announced speed limits on Manchester\u2019s residential and city centre streets will be cut from 30mph to 20mph <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/city-centre-residential-roads-across-30779884\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier this year<\/a>, after a surge in injuries and deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">All main roads would become 30mph, down from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/eight-manchester-roads-speed-limits-30782445\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">40mph on eight routes,<\/a> added Kevin Gillham, Manchester council\u2019s head of citywide highways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Join the Manchester Evening News <\/strong><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">WhatsApp<\/strong><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"> group <\/strong><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/chat.whatsapp.com\/GY77Jy0SeCL8ZFZaNcWsVq\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe are not suggesting a 20mph blanket ban,\u201d he said in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe are looking at bringing main roads down to 30mph, so main roads would be 30mph and residential roads would be 20mph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">On Tuesday (October 7), town hall chiefs gave an update on how the roll-out of lower speed limits is going \u2014 and named the next town to see more 20mph zones as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/wythenshawe\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wythenshawe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThe initial study has been completed and has made a number of recommendations,\u201d explained Catriona Swanson, the council lead for sustainable transport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cOn the back of that, and the Wythenshawe Network Plan, we have secured funding for active travel improvements across Wythenshawe, which includes 20mph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThe deadline to spend that funding is March 2027 so that work is starting to progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_Wythenshawe-Civic-Aerial.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: Manchester City Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">However, Ms Swanson said plans for the full introduction of 20mph zones across the city still need cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">She added: \u201cFor the rest of the city, there\u2019s a little bit more work we need to do which we have commissioned, looking at the potential impact on journey times to ensure we are not creating issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cHopefully it will find the impact on journey times is negligible. But if it does show there\u2019s some impact, we will look at mitigations for that, and potentially look at if we need to amend the extent of that 20mph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThat work is ongoing. We are expecting it to finish in the next few months. We are hoping to use that to secure funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Moving to 20mph on residential roads is seen within the council as standardising the speed limit across Manchester, as around 70pc of Manchester\u2019s roads are already 20mph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Ms Swanson went on: \u201cPeople who live in central, east, and south Manchester will be used to their road being 20. It\u2019s just normal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cBut in Wythenshawe and north Manchester, it\u2019s very patchy.
