{"id":481780,"date":"2025-10-08T02:16:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T02:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/481780\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T02:16:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T02:16:16","slug":"russia-hosts-taliban-delegation-and-warns-against-foreign-military-presence-in-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/481780\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia hosts Taliban delegation and warns against foreign military presence in Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MOSCOW (AP) \u2014 Russia hosted a delegation of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-afghanistan-formally-recognize-taliban-3932240270463715f0338c0812cbe5a8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afghanistan\u2019s ruling Taliban<\/a> government Tuesday and issued a strong warning against a foreign military presence in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the start of an international meeting on Afghanistan in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised the Taliban government for efforts to combat the Islamic State and other extremist groups, as well as eradicate illegal drugs. <\/p>\n<p>Lavrov emphasized that \u201cthe deployment of military infrastructure of any third countries on the territory of Afghanistan, as well as on the territories of neighboring states, is categorically unacceptable under any pretext.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Afghan government rejected a bid by U.S. President Donald Trump <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-afghanistan-bagram-air-base-taliban-china-ed379b4505d074ded5361483832a18d0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to retake Bagram Air Base<\/a>, four years after the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/afghanistan-islamic-state-group-e10e038baea732dae879c11234507f81\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chaotic U.S. withdrawal<\/a> from the country <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bagram-afghanistan-airfield-us-troops-f3614828364f567593251aaaa167e623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left the sprawling military facility<\/a> in the Taliban\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe military presence of any extra-regional players could only lead to destabilization and new conflicts,\u201d Lavrov said. \u201cThe history of Afghanistan has seen a lot of situations with foreign military presence. I believe everyone should have drawn the right conclusions long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former Soviet Union fought a 10-year war in Afghanistan that ended with Moscow withdrawing its troops in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Taliban <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/afghanistan-taliban-takeover-three-years-what-to-know-9d949d0555de84a003333f7ab7d0ef96\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took control of Afghanistan in August 2021<\/a> after the pullback of U.S. and NATO forces, they have sought international recognition while also enforcing their strict interpretation of Islamic law.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Russia became the first country to recognize the Taliban\u2019s government after <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-taliban-designation-court-change-986619152dae1eeb5123deea22fc4633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removing the group from its list<\/a> of outlawed organizations.<\/p>\n<p>At Tuesday\u2019s talks, Lavrov said Russia was looking forward to expanding business ties with Afghanistan and boosting anti-terrorism and anti-narcotics cooperation. He assailed the West for conducting \u201chostile\u201d policies toward Kabul, maintaining a freeze on its assets and other sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi praised \u201cthe bold move of the Russian Federation to officially recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cI appreciate it and wish that all countries follow the same path,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Muttaqi said the Moscow talks offer \u201ca good opportunity for the countries of the region to listen to each other\u2019s views,\u201d noting his government has created an opportunity \u201cto ensure comprehensive security after four decades and provide a good ground for investment, economy, transit and connectivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials from China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan also took part in Tuesday\u2019s talks.<\/p>\n<p>While Russia was the first country to recognize the Taliban administration, the group had engaged in high-level talks with many nations and established some diplomatic ties with countries including China and the United Arab Emirates. <\/p>\n<p>Still, the Taliban government has been relatively isolated on the world stage, largely over its restrictions on women. <\/p>\n<p>Although the Taliban initially promised a more moderate rule than during their first stint in power from 1996 to 2001, it enforced <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/amnesty-taliban-afghan-women-persecution-92ecda618b3ed4940848b0425bc0897a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restrictions on women and girls<\/a> soon after the 2021 takeover.
