{"id":482107,"date":"2025-10-08T05:12:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T05:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/482107\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T05:12:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T05:12:16","slug":"more-than-4bn-in-benefits-will-go-unclaimed-in-london-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/482107\/","title":{"rendered":"More than \u00a34bn in benefits will go unclaimed in London this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The scheme has so far helped people access \u00a340m in support which otherwise would have gone unclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign reportedly helped almost 9,000 households in London secure pension credit since being launched in February 2023, with 4,400 households successfully claiming the benefit in the last year. <\/p>\n<p>Pension credit, which is provided to people of state pension age on low incomes, can unlock further support, including free TV licences for those aged 75 or above, help with energy and council tax bills, and free NHS dental treatment. <\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/news\/social-justice\/winter-fuel-payment-dwp-pensioners-austerity-labour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter fuel payment was limited to only those on pension credit<\/a>, with Khan\u2019s pension credit campaign helping people to access more than \u00a3773,000 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/news\/social-justice\/winter-fuel-payment-labour-u-turn-pensioners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter fuel payments<\/a> they were entitled to.<\/p>\n<p>Winter fuel payments will now be paid to all pensioners and then taken back from anyone with an income over \u00a335,000, but it remains important that low-income households get the support for which they are eligible.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign urged Londoners to check the benefits they are entitled to through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/programmes-strategies\/communities-and-social-justice\/help-cost-living\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Hall\u2019s Cost of Living Hub<\/a> to help them access financial support. Charities including <a href=\"https:\/\/benefits-calculator.turn2us.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turn2us<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stepchange.org\/how-we-help\/benefits-calculator.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StepChange<\/a> offer similar tools, which can help check your entitlement to any benefits, including universal credit. <\/p>\n<p>Advertising helps fund Big Issue\u2019s mission to end poverty<\/p>\n<p>After seeing success with the campaign, Khan is now extending it to help disabled Londoners and families on low incomes to access the support they are entitled to, with up to \u00a3220,000 invested to aid the programme. <\/p>\n<p>The scheme will reportedly support disabled Londoners to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/life\/money\/what-is-pip-how-to-claim-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">access personal independence payment (PIP)<\/a>, while parents on low incomes will also be helped to access healthy start vouchers.<\/p>\n<p>Khan explained that he is \u201cdetermined\u201d to support Londoners with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/news\/social-justice\/will-prices-uk-ever-go-down-cost-of-living-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost of living<\/a>, and that the campaign has already unlocked millions in unclaimed benefits for older people. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know far too many people are still missing out on the vital support that they are entitled to, and it\u2019s shocking that more than \u00a34bn in benefits will go unclaimed across the capital \u2013 money that could be making a huge difference to families, disabled Londoners and older people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m extending my campaign to help reach more Londoners on low incomes and urging Londoners to use City Hall\u2019s Cost of Living Hub to check their entitlements to ensure they or their loved ones don\u2019t miss out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.bigissue.dsb-fly.net\/the-big-issue-contribution-SJHF625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>                                                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"polaris__image image-cta__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Support-journalism-in-article-CTA.png\"  alt=\"\" height=\"250\" width=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The benefits system is \u2018too hard to navigate\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Experts have explained that benefits can often go unclaimed as the system is \u201chard to navigate\u201d, and that campaigns like the mayor of London\u2019s can help people on low incomes to \u201caccess the financial support they are entitled to.<\/p>\n<p>Advertising helps fund Big Issue\u2019s mission to end poverty<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis campaign has already put millions into older Londoners\u2019 pockets and extending it will make a life-changing difference to even more households,\u201d Deven Ghelani, director and founder of Policy in Practice, said. <\/p>\n<p>Abi Wood, CEO of Age UK London, added that the campaign has been a success, but there is a \u201clot of work to be done\u201d, with almost a quarter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bigissue.com\/opinion\/elderly-homeless-london-soup-kitchen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">older people over the age of 80 living in poverty<\/a> in London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis campaign has been highly successful in reaching the older Londoners that are eligible to receive more support and assisting them get that help,\u201d she said. \u201cWith \u00a340m paid out and 9,000 households benefiting since the beginning of the campaign, this will help pull older people in London out of poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joanna Elson of Independent Age added that being able to access all of the support you\u2019re entitled to can be \u201ctransformative\u201d for older people who may be struggling to afford the essentials, and that it\u2019s \u201cencouraging\u201d to see the Mayor of London\u2019s campaign be extended. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u00a340m already secured for older Londoners is a powerful reminder of what\u2019s possible when we break down barriers to receiving financial support,\u201d Elson said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe welcome the Greater London Authority\u2019s commitment to tackle financial hardship in later life and urge the UK government to follow suit by implementing a nationwide take-up strategy.
