{"id":482407,"date":"2025-10-08T07:50:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T07:50:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/482407\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T07:50:22","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T07:50:22","slug":"chad-cuts-ties-with-wildlife-charity-linked-to-prince-harry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/482407\/","title":{"rendered":"Chad cuts ties with wildlife charity linked to Prince Harry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">African Parks, of which Prince Harry is a board member and former president, helped look after two wildlife reserves in Chad: the Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve and the Greater Zakouma Ecosystem, which includes the Zakouma and Siniaka-Minia national parks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They were among 22 national parks and protected areas across 12 countries managed by the group. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is the latest scandal to plague the organisation. Earlier this year, it admitted that employees in a park it managed in the Republic of Congo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cq54dgv2p29o\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had abused members of the local community. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It also refused to publish an independent report into the abuses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The non-profit organisation was informed of the government&#8217;s &#8220;unilateral decision&#8221; on Monday in an official letter from Environment Minister Hassan Bakhit Djamous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Chad&#8217;s environment ministry blamed the resurgence of poaching in its natural parks on a lack of investment by the charity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The charity, founded in 2000, aims to protect Africa&#8217;s national parks and advance conservation in the continent and around the world, particularly in countries that struggle to look after their wildlife because of poverty and conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It manages more than 20 million hectares of protected area with the goal of making each park &#8220;ecologically, socially and financially sustainable for the long term&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prince Harry sits on the board of African Parks and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-37801752\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">involved with the charity since 2016<\/a>. In 2023, after serving six years as president, he was made a member of the board of directors, the governing body of the organisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On its website, African Parks lists a number of high-profile donors including the European Union, Rob Walton, heir to the Walmart fortune, and Howard Buffett, son of Warren Buffet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In its 2023 annual report, the charity said its funders provided it with more than $500,000 (\u00a3375,000) per year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Chadian government&#8217;s decision is a new blow to Harry&#8217;s charitable endeavours after he stepped down earlier this year from Sentebale, an organisation he founded to help children orphaned by Aids in Botswana and Lesotho.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His resignation as patron of the charity followed a highly publicised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c741n548dkko\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boardroom battle with chairwoman Dr Sophie Chandauka<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"African Parks, of which Prince Harry is a board member and former president, helped look after two wildlife&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":482408,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[12,26],"class_list":{"0":"post-482407","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-world","8":"tag-news","9":"tag-world"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115337456774277363","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/482407","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=482407"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/482407\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/482408"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=482407"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=482407"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=482407"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
