A French high-school student has been arrested after killing a classmate and wounding three others during a stabbing spree.<\/p>\n
The incident happened in at the Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides high school in the north-western French city of Nantes on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The response has been hailed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who said teachers tackled the armed student and prevented more carnage.<\/p>\n
“Through their intervention, the teachers likely prevented other tragedies. Their courage demands respect,” Mr Macron wrote on X.<\/p>\n
The alleged attacker was later arrested by police.<\/p>\n
France has in recent years been shaken by a series of school incidents involving attacks on teachers as well as schoolchildren by their peers.<\/p>\n

Police to make random searches<\/p>\n
Concerned parents gathered outside of the school, which had already been cordoned off by police who, with French soldiers, were guarding the site.<\/p>\n
Ludivine, 48, said she had learned that the attack had happened in her daughter’s class.<\/p>\n
“As an anxious mother who doesn’t let her out alone, I never thought anything would happen to her at her school,” she said.<\/p>\n

French Education Minister Elisabeth Borne and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau later arrived at the scene.<\/p>\n
“A knife attack took place at lunchtime today at a private school in Nantes,” Ms Borne posted on X earlier.<\/p>\n
“I am travelling to the scene with @BrunoRetailleau to express my solidarity with the victims and my support for the educational community,” she added.<\/p>\n
Borne in February said police would start random searches for knives and other weapons concealed in bags at and around schools in a bid to deal with an increase in violent attacks.<\/p>\n
