Heather Humphreys was forced to delete and re-edit a campaign video about a \u2018day in Belfast\u2019 after her campaign mistakenly included an image of Germany instead.<\/p>\n

The Fine Gael Presidential candidate<\/a> posted the video to her social media accounts in an attempt to showcase her links to the North.<\/p>\n

However, the original video showed the Bundestag in Berlin with a German flag waving atop the building, instead of Belfast City Hall. <\/p>\n

Humphreys made the trip to visit Ulster University and a number of other venues, including St Dominic\u2019s School on the Falls Road, which counts Mary McAleese as a former student.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The video was captioned: \u2018I will be a President for All. Thank you to St Dominic\u2019s for the invitation to visit the school of our former President, Mary McAleese on the Falls Road and to all of the local community groups and students I met in Queen\u2019s University and @StudyAtUlster. A lovely day in Belfast.\u2019<\/p>\n

The mistake comes just three days after the candidate insisted she had a \u2018unique understanding\u2019 of the North and doesn\u2019t \u2018just go on day trips\u2019 there.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, social media has eaten up the error and jokes have been made in abundance online.<\/p>\n

One user wrote: \u2018Easy to confuse both cities, they each begin with the letter B. Honest mistake.\u2019<\/p>\n

A video showcasing Heather Humphreys\u2019 visit to Belfast has been deleted from, and reposted to, her social media accounts \u2013 after the original version included an image of the Bundestag instead of Belfast\u2019s City Hall.<\/p>\n

Another commented: \u2018To FG a president for the Four Provinces means Leinster, Munster, Connacht and East Germany apparently!\u2019<\/p>\n

A third added: \u2018Some of these social media interns are in dire need of further training.\u2019<\/p>\n

Humphreys now only has one candidate campaigning against her, Catherine Connolly, since Jim Gavin withdrew his campaign<\/a> on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

With only the pair of them campaigning, it is the first time<\/a> in more than 20 years that the options have been so few.<\/p>\n

In 2004, after serving her first term of seven years,\u00a0Mary McAleese<\/a>\u00a0was re-elected uncontested for a second seven-year term.<\/p>\n

The Belfast native ran for the first time in 1997 and went up against four other candidates, including Dana.<\/p>\n

The Fianna F\u00e1il and Progressive Democrats representative received 45% of the first-preference votes when she was elected for her first term.<\/p>\n

Prior to 2004, there were three consecutive instances where there was a sole candidate \u2014 1974, Fianna F\u00e1il\u2019s Cearbhall \u00d3\u2019D\u00e1laigh was elected unopposed; 1976, Patrick Hillery was elected unopposed following the retirement of \u00d3\u2019D\u00e1llaigh, and in 1983, Patrick Hillery was re-elected for a second term.<\/p>\n

The first time the Presidential Election was a two-horse race was in 1959 when \u00c9amon de Valera, Fianna F\u00e1il, defeated Fine Gael\u2019s Se\u00e1n Mac Eoin.<\/p>\n

In 1966, de Valera defeated Fine Gael\u2019s Tom O\u2019Higgins, while in 1973, Fianna F\u00e1il candidate Erskin H.Childers defeated the same Fine Gael candidate.<\/p>\n

Another instance where there was only one candidate was in 1952 when Se\u00e1n T. O\u2019Kelly was re-elected uncontested.<\/p>\n

The last Presidential Election, which took place in 2018 saw Michael D Higgins retain his position uncontested.<\/p>\n

2011 saw the most Presidential candidates with seven officially nominated. Michael D Higgins was elected for his first time but went up against the likes of Dana, Se\u00e1n Gallagher as well as David Norris and Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Martin McGuinness.<\/p>\n
