The 29 European countries using the Entry/Exit System (EES) will gradually introduce the new checks at their borders, which should be fully operational by 10 April 2026.

As third-country nationals, British passport-holders will be required to provide biometric details – facial and fingerprint scans – alongside their passport once every three years (or until their passport expires, whichever comes first).

While this could initially prove problematic at busy ports and airports as the scheme is rolled out, there is one way to avoid the hassle.

Passengers departing from and returning to a UK port on a European cruise will not be subject to EES checks when they disembark the ship for day trips on the continent. This is because EES replaces passport-stamping (ensuring visitors do not overstay the 90 days in every 180 rule), which does not take place during shore visits.

Virgin Voyage’s ‘Valiant Lady’ will sail from Portsmouth on a solar eclipse cruise in 2026 (Photo: photosvit/Getty)

So, if you are keen on a European city break but don’t want the formality of joining a border control queue, an ex-UK cruise could be the answer.
