{"id":482937,"date":"2025-10-08T12:32:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T12:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/482937\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T12:32:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T12:32:10","slug":"more-liverpool-public-buildings-to-join-hi-tech-canal-powered-heat-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/482937\/","title":{"rendered":"More Liverpool public buildings to join hi-tech canal-powered heat network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three major public buildings on Liverpool\u2019s waterfront are to slash carbon emissions by joining a heat network driven by energy from canal water.<\/p>\n<p>Under the plan, an extended pipeline will connect Georges Dock building, the Cunard building, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prolificnorth.co.uk\/news\/national-museums-liverpool-partners-with-digital-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Museum of Liverpool<\/a>, part of National Museums Liverpool (NML), to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prolificnorth.co.uk\/news\/landsec-buys-mediacity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peel Group<\/a>\u2018s Mersey Heat Network.<\/p>\n<p>The newly opened Mersey Heat Energy Centre is already supplying the Liverpool Waters site, Torus\u2019 Hartley Locks development, the Titanic Hotel and the Tobacco Warehouse apartments.<\/p>\n<p>It uses water source heat pumps to extract energy from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to power a network of heating pipes.<\/p>\n<p>The project is the latest in the Liverpool City Region\u2019s five-year carbon action plan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prolificnorth.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-looks-to-ev-future-as-council-moves-to-remove-emissions-from-vehicle-fleet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journey to reach net zero<\/a>.\u202fThe Combined Authority has recently secured an additional \u00a335m to decarbonise dozens of other public buildings from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero. \u202f<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prolificnorth.co.uk\/news\/bbc-made-of-here-campaign-comes-to-100-screens-across-liverpool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">READ MORE: BBC Made of Here campaign comes to 100+ screens across Liverpool<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cllr Anthony Burns, Liverpool City Region cabinet member for net zero, and Councillor Liam Robinson, cabinet member for innovation, joined representatives from Ener-Vate and contractor Vital Energi to mark the launch of the Mersey Heat Energy Centre last week.<\/p>\n<p>Burns said: \u201cBuilding a cleaner, greener future isn\u2019t just about meeting targets \u2013 it\u2019s about improving people\u2019s lives. The Mersey Heat Energy Centre is a fantastic example of how we can use our region\u2019s strengths and ingenuity to cut carbon, lower energy bills, and support jobs in the industries of the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the scale of the challenge we\u2019re facing \u2013 but also the scale of the opportunity. Projects like this show that we\u2019re serious about hitting our target to be net zero by 2035, at least a decade ahead of the rest of the country, and that the Liverpool City Region is leading the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson added: \u201cThe launch of the Mersey Heat Energy Centre is a landmark moment in Liverpool City Region\u2019s journey towards a cleaner, greener future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a visible example of how we are leading the way on low carbon infrastructure, protecting historic buildings, cutting emissions and creating long term green value for our communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiverpool has long been a leader in climate action, and this project reinforces our commitment to achieving net zero. It\u2019s not just about infrastructure, it\u2019s about creating a legacy of sustainability that benefits our communities, our economy, and our environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud to see this vision and investment come to life, creating jobs in the emerging green economy. I want to thank all the partners involved for helping Liverpool take another bold step towards a low carbon future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Private homes account for the majority of carbon emissions, while public buildings are responsible for 13% of the total. Together, the city region\u2019s six local authorities and the combined authority own more than 600 buildings that emit almost 77,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the North West secured almost \u00a3117m from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme Wave 4 \u2013 more than\u202fGreater London and the biggest national award.<\/p>\n<p>The Combined Authority plans to use the recent award of \u00a335m \u2013 the biggest single project in the country \u2013 to retrofit energy-saving measures in dozens of public buildings including historic town halls, art galleries, libraries and leisure centres.
