Soho Road BID team said they must ‘prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all potential attendees’ amid evolving statutory requirements<\/p>\n

The Birmingham Diwali Mela 2025 has been postponed amid ‘safety fears and evolving statutory requirements’ – just days before the event this weekend.<\/p>\n

Organisers issued a statement today ahead of the popular occasion – which features music, fairground rides, food and fireworks from Soho Road in Handsworth<\/a> – which had been due to take place from midday on Sunday, October 12.<\/p>\n

Those behind it say they must “prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all potential attendees as highlighted by the recent attack in Manchester” where two people were killed in a knife attack at a synagogue last week.<\/p>\n

The Soho Road BID team said that “every possible avenue was explored in the effort to host this event.” However, organisers also highlighted “evolving statutory requirements”, which included Martyn\u2019s Law.<\/p>\n

This is a law that was passed in April under the Terrorism Protection of Premises Act, which requires publicly accessible venues to implement security measures and preparedness plans against terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n

It followed the Manchester Arena attack when 22 people were killed and 116 injured in a suicide bombing on May 22, 2017. The law was named after 29-year-old Martyn Hett, who was one of tragic victims in the blast.<\/p>\n

It is hoped the tenth Birmingham<\/a> Premier Diwali Mela 2025 can be rescheduled to a new date.<\/p>\n

In a post of social media, the Soho Road BID team, posted today: “This notice is issued by the Soho Road Business Improvement District (BID) for the attention of all BID Levy Payers, stakeholders and our community.<\/p>\n

“Following our latest meeting with the Safety Advisory Group (SAG), it has been determined that the event cannot go ahead as planned.<\/p>\n

“This conclusion was reached after careful consideration, prioritising the safety and wellbeing of all potential attendees as highlighted by the recent attack in Manchester and evolving statutory requirements, including Martyn\u2019s Law.<\/p>\n

“We are actively engaged in ongoing dialogue with the SAG to secure a future date for the postponed 10th Birmingham<\/a> Premier Diwali Mela (2025).<\/p>\n

“We share the disappointment felt by the community and all stakeholders and assure you that every possible avenue was explored in the effort to host this event as scheduled.<\/p>\n
