Prince William and Kate Middleton<\/a>, along with their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, are getting ready for a big move. The whole family has been living full-time at the four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage in Windsor since 2022, but the BBC<\/a> recently reported that the Prince and Princess of Wales will soon permanently relocate<\/a> to Forest Lodge, a stately Georgian manor also in Windsor.<\/p>\n

Part of the reason for the move is due to the challenges they\u2019ve faced in the last year and a half, including Kate\u2019s cancer diagnosis and Queen Elizabeth\u2019s death. \u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind,\u201d a royal source told the BBC.<\/a> Their new eight-bedroom home is reportedly where they plan to live when they become King and Queen.<\/p>\n

Forest Lodge will likely be the last in a long string of homes inhabited by the Prince and Princess of Wales. The couple famously met as undergraduates while attending the University of St Andrews in Scotland and have moved around a solid amount throughout their relationship. See below for the full breakdown of the many places Will and Kate have called home over the years.<\/p>\n

As freshman at the University of St Andrews in 2001, both William and Kate lived on campus at St. Salvators Hall, nicknamed \u201cSallies.\u201d<\/a> The co-eds became \u201cinstant companions\u201d a friend later told The Sun<\/a>. By their second year, they decided to move off-campus together with two other friends, Fergus Boyd and Olivia Bleasdale. They found a grey-stone Victorian terraced house at 13A Hope Street with a four-bedroom flat for lease. The landlady, Charlotte Smith, bent her strict \u201cno boys\u201d policy <\/a>after learning the future King of England would be among the group of renters. Each of the tenants paid around $100 per month<\/a> in rent. To ensure William\u2019s safety, bulletproof windows and a bombproof front door had to be installed.<\/p>\n

In a bid to keep prying eyes (and the press) away from their budding romance, William and Kate moved even further off campus for their last two years at St Andrews. Along with Fergus Boyd, they relocated to a cottage on the 400-acre Strathtyrum Estate, <\/a>which was owned by Henry Cheape, a close friend of the Royal Family and one of William\u2019s distant cousins. Called Balgove House, the four-bedroom home was secured with CCTV cameras<\/a> and regularly patrolled by security staff. \u201cWilliam said it was just like a miniature Highgrove,\u201d wrote Robert Lacey in 2020 book, Battle of Brothers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

William and Kate graduated from St Andrews in 2005, and lived apart for several years, per Vanity Fair.<\/a> Their on-again-off-again relationship became permanently on in 2010, when William proposed to Kate<\/a> on a mountainside in Kenya. The Prince then enlisted with the Royal Air Force as a search-and-rescue pilot based in rural Wales. Kate would later join him, moving into his rented farmhouse, the Bodorgan Estate<\/a>, owned by Lord and Lady Meyrick on the isle of Anglesey. They lived here from 2011 to 2013, and it\u2019s considered Prince George\u2019s first home.<\/a><\/p>\n

After leaving, William said:<\/a> \u201cThis island has been our first home together, and it will always be an immensely special place for us both. Catherine and I look forward to returning again and again over the coming years with our family.\u201d Indeed, they did return to the region<\/a> again in 2023, marking the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n

During the period of time when William was enlisted in the Royal Air Force, the couple used Nottingham Cottage as their London base, per Vanity Fair.<\/a> Set on the grounds of Kensington Palace, the two-bedroom lodge dates to the 17th century and was designed by famed architect Christopher Wren. Though a temporary home for William and Kate, it later also served as the first marital home of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. \u201cNott Cott was no palace,\u201d Harry wrote in his 2023 memoir, Spare<\/a>. \u201cIt was also constructed for smaller people, humans of a bygone era. Thus the rooms were tiny and the ceilings were doll\u2019s house low.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the birth of Prince George in 2013, Kate and William relocated<\/a> to one of the \u201capartment\u201d residences at Kensington Palace in London. The former home of Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s sister Princess Margaret, Apartment 1A spans four stories and contains 20 rooms, including five reception halls. The residence was renovated<\/a> prior to the couple moving in to ensure internal systems were up to date and asbestos was removed. The redecorated interiors weren\u2019t seen until a visit from U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in 2016.<\/p>\n

Queen Elizabeth II gave William and Kate a beautifully preserved Georgian manor following their 2011 nuptials. Known as Anmer Hall,<\/a> the 10-bedroom country house is located on the grounds of the family\u2019s 20,000-acre Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Before moving in, the couple tapped designers Ben Pentreath and Anne Allen along with architect Charles Morris to spearhead a $2 million revamp.<\/a> During the 2020 pandemic lockdowns<\/a>, the couple and their three children relocated to the estate.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the couple moved their London base from the Kensington Palace apartment residence to Adelaide Cottage, just outside the city and a ten-minute walk<\/a> to Windsor Castle. Designed by Sir Jeffry Wyatville in a whimsical style, the 1831 lodge was meant to be a summer getaway for King Willian IV\u2019s wife, Queen Adelaide, per Vanity Fair.<\/a> William and Kate switched due to their desire to raise their children in a more private setting closer to their school. \u201cWe were in London but moved there for more green space,\u201d Kate said<\/a> earlier this year. Notably, the couple never had any live-in staff. It also sent a message that they were content on living in a \u201cmodest home,\u201d<\/a> as far as royal standards go.<\/p>\n

Kensington Palace officials confirmed in August<\/a> that William and Kate will be relocating from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge.<\/a> Just four miles from their current Windsor residence, the eight-bedroom Georgian manor dates to the 1770s and became part of the Crown Estate (belonging to the current monarch on behalf of the British people) in 1829. The reason for the move is that the family wanted to stay close to their children\u2019s school and retain a level of privacy. Just as with Adelaide Cottage, no staff will live on-site. The interiors, which include original masonry and and plasterwork, were renovated in 2001. The BBC<\/a> reported that in advance of the current move, a planning application was submitted to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead for several minor alterations, among them the removal of a window and fireplace work.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that as the Prince of Wales, William also owns the Duchy of Cornwall,<\/a> which he inherited when his father ascended the throne in 2022. The Duchy is a vast estate of land that generates income for the Prince of Wales. Spanning 130,965 acres across 20 counties in England, the property portfolio is worth an estimated $1 billion<\/a> and provides Prince William with around $25.35 million of profits per year,<\/a> after taxes. While under the stewardship of King Charles III (then Prince of Wales), the Duchy acquired Highgrove House in the 1980s. The monarch loves the property so much that he leases it from William for roughly $786,000 per year. <\/a><\/p>\n
