NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 A novel about identity and a missing youth, a history of the overthrow of the Shah of Iran<\/a> and a picture book celebrating the underappreciated belly button are this year\u2019s winners of the Kirkus Prize, which includes a $50,000 cash award for each of the three categories.<\/p>\n

Lucas Schaefer\u2019s \u201cThe Slip,\u201d which follows a man\u2019s search for a nephew who disappeared years earlier, won for fiction, while the award for nonfiction was given to Scott Anderson\u2019s \u201cKing of Kings: The Iranian Revolution: A Story of Hubris, Delusion and Catastrophic Miscalculation.\u201d The winner for young readers\u2019 literature was Thao Lam\u2019s \u201cEverybelly,\u201d a poolside view of belly buttons and the stories they tell.<\/p>\n

Established in 2014, the prizes are overseen by the trade publication Kirkus Reviews.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s Kirkus Prize winners bring us vital messages for our time \u2014 messages about the joys of community, the power of self-transformation, and the mutability of historical events \u2014 all conveyed through exhilarating prose and pictures,\u201d Kirkus Editor-in-Chief Tom Beer said in a statement Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Finalists included Angela Flournoy\u2019s novel \u201cThe Wilderness\u201d; Nicholas Boggs\u2019 biography of James Baldwin, \u201cBaldwin: A Love Story\u201d; and Arundhati Roy\u2019s<\/a> memoir, \u201cMother Mary Comes to Me.\u201d <\/p>\n
