Just three teams remain undefeated after a second day of curling<\/strong><\/a> wrapped up at the Pre-Olympic Qualification Event 2025<\/strong><\/a> in Aberdeen, Scotland, on Wednesday (8 October).<\/p>\n

Germany’s women, led by skip Kim<\/strong> Sutor<\/strong>, banked back-to-back wins over Mexico (12-3) and Lithuania (8-6) to go 3-0 and sit atop of the women’s round robin standings.<\/p>\n

Just underneath them are Czechia, who are also unbeaten, but with a game in hand.<\/p>\n

Down 3-6 after five ends in their opener against Hungary, the Czechs successfully rallied from behind to claim a 9-8 win in the morning session, before returning to the ice in the evening to see off Chinese Taipei, 11-2.<\/p>\n

Over in the men’s event, the Philippines came out 6-5 on top of a tight encounter against New Zealand to progress to day three of the Olympic qualifier as the only team with a perfect record.<\/p>\n

In a highly anticipated match-up with both teams yet to lose, things were perfectly square at 4-4 in the eighth end, before New Zealand broke the deadlock after Philippines’ skip Marc Pfister<\/strong>‘s double take-out attempt came up just short of its target.<\/p>\n

Though the steal gave New Zealand the lead on the board, it in turn meant the Philippines retained the last-stone advantage going into the tenth end.<\/p>\n

With the Philippines lying two and just the skips left to throw, Anton<\/strong> Hood<\/strong> attempted a runback double in a bid to dislodge the Filipino rocks near the button, while keeping his own nearby untouched.<\/p>\n

When it missed, Pfister responded with a draw to add a third Filipino stone into the mix, forcing Hood into the same shot again. Despite his best efforts, the New Zealander was only able to take one of the Philippines’ stones out, leaving two for the score.<\/p>\n

The loss moves New Zealand to a 2-1 record along with Poland, who defeated Australia 8-3 in the evening session to claim joint second in the men’s standings.<\/p>\n

Australia, and Chinese Taipei, are still yet to register wins in Aberdeen, while Austria and Denmark both sit on a 1-1 record.<\/p>\n

A total of 14 teams – seven men and seven women – are in Aberdeen to try and secure the six remaining spots for the final Olympic Qualification Event in Canada in December. There, the final quota spots for Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026<\/strong><\/a> will be determined.*<\/p>\n

The action continues tomorrow with two sessions of curling, one in the morning and the other in the late afternoon.<\/p>\n
