Since it orbits above the Earth, it can capture better cosmic images than telescopes on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hubble has made more than 1.6 million observations over the course of its lifetime, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/overview\/about-hubble\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NASA says;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">NASA says<\/a>. And Hubble&#8217;s discoveries have spawned more than 21,000 peer-reviewed science papers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/in-depth\/graphics\/2022\/01\/16\/webb-telescope-compared-to-hubble-telescope\/5460587001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The James Webb Space Telescope;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>, which orbits the sun, has captured much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/james-webb-space-telescope-unveils-150930723.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:space news attention;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">space news attention<\/a>, but it certainly hasn&#8217;t put Hubble out of business.<\/p>\n<p>What is the Hubble Space Telescope?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Hubble telescope was designed to be the first space-based observatory, which could be serviced and upgraded while it remained in orbit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It was named after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2015\/04\/13\/hubble-telescope-hailed-on-25th-anniversary\/25708323\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Edwin Hubble;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Edwin Hubble<\/a>, the astronomer who showed that other galaxies existed beyond our own and came up with a classification scheme distinguishing galaxies by shape.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"This Hubble Space Telescope image captures the beauty of the moth-like planetary nebula NGC 2899, which has a nearly 40,000-degree-Fahrenheit white dwarf at the center.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"959\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/a56159ca0d170f8823447e733d6f21bd.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This Hubble Space Telescope image captures the beauty of the moth-like planetary nebula NGC 2899, which has a nearly 40,000-degree-Fahrenheit white dwarf at the center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">About the same size as a school bus, the Hubble telescope uses three types of instruments to capture images across the universe:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Cameras:<\/strong> Hubble has two cameras \u2013 the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), which is primarily used for visible-light imaging, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/observatory\/design\/instruments\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NASA;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">NASA<\/a>. The Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) views infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths for higher resolution, deeper images. The ACS was repaired and the WFC3 was installed during <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/observatory\/missions-to-hubble\/servicing-mission-4\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a May 2009 servicing mission;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a May 2009 servicing mission<\/a> involving five spacewalks by astronauts from the space shuttle Atlantis.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Spectrographs:<\/strong> The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph is the most sensitive ultraviolet spectrograph ever, capturing light and breaking it down to assess temperature, density, chemical composition, and velocity of objects, such as stars and quasars.
