{"id":485266,"date":"2025-10-09T09:10:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T09:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/485266\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T09:10:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T09:10:16","slug":"how-reading-romance-has-helped-keep-the-spark-alive-for-this-couple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/485266\/","title":{"rendered":"How reading romance has helped keep the spark alive for this couple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After 10 years of marriage and two kids, Joseph Heath says he and wife Laura are still in the &#8220;honeymoon phase&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And part of that is thanks to romance novels,&#8221; says the 31-year-old, based in the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Joseph says romance novels are &#8220;one of the best things to happen&#8221; to his marriage, specifically when it comes to intimacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t necessarily read romance books fully, but I do read scenes my wife shows me or listen to clips from audiobooks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While spicy literature can help women with a &#8220;mental warm-up&#8221; when it comes to sex, their male partners can benefit too, explains Armin Ariana, a sexologist and president of the Society of Australian Sexologists Queensland branch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a trend in [heterosexual] couples where most go into what we can call a three-act play: kiss, touch, penetrate,&#8221; Dr Ariana says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Romance novels show you hundreds of other ways it could look different; and bring that connection and intimacy into reality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Enjoying romantic fiction as a couple<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Laura Heath, aged 30, began sharing her love of romance books on social media in 2020 and has attracted almost 300,000 followers on TikTok.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Laura also says the genre has made a &#8220;very positive&#8221; impact on her sex life with Joseph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have discovered new things from romance books and let me just say, thank goodness for authors writing such creative spicy situations, it has been life changing, truly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Laura Heath and Joseph Heath looking at each other\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0886b92feca09ea09a1dc8f052a46d55\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Laura and Joseph Heath have been married for 10 years. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Ariana says sexual desire thrives on novelty, imagination and emotional connection, and romance is &#8220;just one doorway&#8221; into that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He says erotic literature acts as an &#8220;imagination gym&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Women are good at appreciating when reading romance, they get that sense of desire \u2026 &#8216;I see how it feels to be desired or wanted&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It helps them warm up [for sex].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He says men reading women-centred spice can help rewrite the sexual script in their relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In a heterosexual setting, regardless of culture or society, most of us fall into the macho nature of men \u2014 that women give, men take.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Stories centred around women is teaching men pleasure, emotional connection and equality.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;This is like a blueprint of what women fantasise about; so why wouldn&#8217;t you read the playbook?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Loading Instagram content<\/p>\n<p>A tool for conversations about consent<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Romantic fiction has also helped Laura talk about intimacy with her husband, including boundaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[Romance books] have helped me work through personal situations and overcome things I was afraid of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Pair that with a husband who is understanding and supportive, it is truly the best combination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-08\/why-women-get-bored-with-sex-long-before-their-male-partners\/105585190\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why women get bored with sex long before their male partners<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Research shows women losing interest in sex before their male partners is less about not wanting it at all, and more about being bored of the sex on offer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Joseph says communication is a key part of their sex life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I listen to her, and we communicate very clearly what our boundaries are and what we want to try and what we don&#8217;t \u2014 and it works really well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bigambul and Wakka Wakka woman Melanie Saward is a romance author and lecturer at the University of Queensland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She says romance books can demonstrate positive communication around consent and safe sex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I just read one a couple of weeks ago that the whole time that these two partners were together, he was saying, &#8216;What do you like? (supplied\/Jill Kerswill)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are many types of romance, and people who read dark romance, for example, might not want sexual scenarios to play out in real life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Some things are just fantasy&#8221;, explains Dr Ariana, adding it&#8217;s important to discuss the difference with a partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Same with watching porn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You might picture those things in your head to warm up \u2026 but you might have some no-go zone for things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No longer a stigma attached to reading romance<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Reading romance is no longer something people feel ashamed of, says Dr Saward, but she doesn&#8217;t know many straight men who do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I go to a book club \u2026 and it&#8217;s all women of different ages and relationships statuses, and they are all interested in talking about the spice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Former rugby league player Luke Bateman of recent TikTok fame has been helping to normalise men reading romance novels, regularly providing his reviews of romantasy or &#8220;fantasy smut&#8221; in the world of #BookTok.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in his late 20s with dark brown hair, smiling, sitting in farming equipment \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/8f03aa22ca539e9f7962f2413357739a\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Farmer Luke Bateman shares his love of fantasy books on TikTok.
