{"id":485330,"date":"2025-10-09T09:44:20","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T09:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/485330\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T09:44:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T09:44:20","slug":"edinburgh-startup-builds-bloomberg-style-waste-trading-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/485330\/","title":{"rendered":"Edinburgh startup builds \u2018Bloomberg-style\u2019 waste trading platform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Edinburgh tech startup has created a \u2018Bloomberg-style\u2019 trading platform for organic waste, promising to turn one industry\u2019s refuse into another\u2019s gold.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaste.bio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vaste<\/a> in collaboration with computing experts from Edinburgh College, the platform will support Scottish businesses in meeting net zero and sustainability targets, boosting the country\u2019s circular bioeconomy when it launches to commercial buyers later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses will be able to bid on bio-based feedstocks, like food waste, oils, agri-residues, and whisky by-products, along with forestry by-products and brewery waste, with target buyers using these as green alternatives to petrochemicals for energy, biofuels, chemicals, and pharma.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/digit-expo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"DIGIT Expo 2025 | Edinburgh\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760003060_252_4.jpg\" alt=\"DIGIT Expo 2025 | Edinburgh\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There have already been signs of interest, with Vaste in talks with industrial buyers who intend to use the tool to procure several thousand tonnes of cooking oils and waste potatoes for biofuel plants.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC), which provided funding for the project, there is currently no other system that can connect businesses producing these residues with buyers who can turn those materials into high-value, sustainable products.<\/p>\n<p>The platform will also offer real-time market insights, data analytics, and automated compliance tools, helping buyers and sellers digitise key data, from carbon footprint tracking to sustainability reporting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVaste\u2019s platform has the potential to become a core element of how the bioeconomy in Scotland, and the rest of the UK, develops in the years to come,\u201d said Kim Cameron, senior business engagement manager at IBioIC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess to market insights and the ability to reliably procure feedstocks will provide companies with an additional level of confidence to invest in bio-based products and processes, as well as reassurance that the supply chain exists to support their business model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bioenergy and energy from waste accounted for 8.1% of all renewable electricity generated in Scotland in 2019, amounting to 2,472 GWh, with the Scottish Government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/bioenergy-update-march-2021\/pages\/4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predicting<\/a> that the use of domestic resources for bioenergy has the potential to more than double from 6.7 TWh per year to 14 TWh per year by 2030.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended reading<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reaching those targets will mean scaling up the availability of feedstocks, though currently the UK is overly dependent on imports, which make up as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieabioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/CountryReport2024_UK_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30%<\/a> of the supply for bio-based industries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the UK\u2019s bio-based industries are reliant on imports of feedstocks, which need not be the case,\u201d said Evans Chelal, founder and chief executive of Vaste.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe demand for the kinds of organic waste materials we are looking at exists locally, but the supply chains are either nascent or completely undeveloped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndustrial buyers don\u2019t necessarily have the transparent connections or effective tools to access these materials.
