{"id":485437,"date":"2025-10-09T10:40:24","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T10:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/485437\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T10:40:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T10:40:24","slug":"slancha-squeezes-fiat-126-into-london-gallery-for-car-boot-sale-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/485437\/","title":{"rendered":"Slancha squeezes Fiat 126 into London gallery for Car Boot Sale exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK gallery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/slancha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slancha<\/a> brought together 16 emerging designers from across the country to capture the spirit of car boot sales as part of its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/exhibitions-tag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">show<\/a>, featuring products made from offcuts, found objects and flea market bargains.<\/p>\n<p>Half of the pieces in <a href=\"https:\/\/londondesignfestival.com\/activities\/the-car-boot-sale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Car Boot Sale exhibition<\/a>, which took place at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formd.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Formd<\/a> gallery in Shoreditch as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london-design-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London Design Festival<\/a>, came from <a href=\"https:\/\/slancha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slancha<\/a>&#8216;s existing roster of early-career designers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2255217 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/slancha-car-boot-sale-exhibition-ldf_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Lamp by Adit Abhey Poonia\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Slancha premiered The Car Boot Sale at London Design Festival<\/p>\n<p>The other half founders Findlay MacDonald and Harvey Everson sourced entirely via an open call, in a bid to democratise participation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Space is at a premium here,&#8221; MacDonald told Dezeen. &#8220;And we had the opportunity to partner with Formd to own the space and be able to put on a show of a reasonable scale that people might not necessarily get into otherwise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we thought it was a great opportunity to start showing work from people we hadn&#8217;t worked with before and showcase people that might not really have the opportunity to work with galleries and to be shown in a great space in London.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2255228 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/slancha-car-boot-sale-exhibition-ldf_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Table with trinket dishes and candle holder\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The exhibition features work by 16 emerging designers<\/p>\n<p>The idea of theming the exhibition around a car boot sale was born from this same desire\u00a0for inclusivity, allowing Slancha to show a broad range of work from a broad range of disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Growing up, we both loved going to car boot sales with our family,&#8221; MacDonald explained. &#8220;And we thought it was a great way of showing an eclectic mix of work that can all work together in its own harmonious way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s also quite an emotive thing for a lot of people,&#8221; he added. &#8220;So we thought it would be a great way of encouraging rough and ready ways of making work, as well as translating the memories that people have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2255221 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/slancha-car-boot-sale-exhibition-ldf_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Oyster dish by James Stephenson\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>James Stephenson, ThisIsByron, Thomas Wheller and Oliver Spendley all contributed trays<\/p>\n<p>Much like a real car boot, the exhibition was set up around a cherry-red Fiat 126, which had to be carefully squeezed into the gallery by removing the building&#8217;s door and its frame.<\/p>\n<p>Formd founder Lewis Miles managed to procure the vehicle via eBay only the day before the opening, after the four-by-four originally intended for the purpose got stuck three-quarters of the way through the door.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2255233 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/slancha-car-boot-sale-exhibition-ldf_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"The Car Boot Sale exhibition by Slancha at LDF 2025\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Studio EastxEast presented a Frankenstein-ed furniture piece<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the show, pieces from 16 different designers were presented in small assemblages, grouped together on carpets, shelves, tables and crates.<\/p>\n<p>Scottish designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/oliver.spendley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oliver Spendley<\/a> was among several contributors who chose to work with found materials, carving rudimentary ashtrays out of stones he collected in the Highlands, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thomaswheller\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Wheller<\/a>\u00a0presented an &#8220;instinctively carved&#8221; tray made from reclaimed Scandinavian pine.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/26\/london-design-festival-emerging-designers-roundup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/sq-7-emerging-designers-ldf-2025-c_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Collage of work by emerging designers from London Design Festival 2025\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Twelve emerging designers who stole the show at London Design Festival\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Others went straight to the source and scoured car boot sales for viable materials. Pewter tankards and other paraphernalia were melted down to form a series of ashtrays by London designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thisisbyron_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This Is Byron<\/a>, and\u00a0Newcastle&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/james.stephensonn\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Stephenson<\/a> turned unwanted cutlery into wall hooks and a small tray shaped like a photorealistic oyster.<\/p>\n<p>South Korean duo<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/studio_easteast\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Studio EastxEast<\/a> shared their graduation project from Central Saint Martins \u2013 a multi-functional furniture piece, Frankenstein-ed together from different flea market finds, that can function as a chair, table and shelf.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2255229 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/slancha-car-boot-sale-exhibition-ldf_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Lighting and shelf at The Car Boot Sale exhibition\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>George Richardson&#8217;s Knuck shelf was lathe turned<\/p>\n<p>Manchester export <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jakerobertsonsss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jake Robertson<\/a> worked instead with his own offcuts to create the Pendant Lamp with Holes, as well as fashioning a chair from standard aluminium bars and leftover valchromat.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Glasgow jewellery designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/militsa_milenkova\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Militsa Milenkova<\/a> used a hydraulic press to turn snippets of aluminium into tea light holders and London-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/emiliatombolesi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emilia Tombolesi<\/a> blow-torched scrap copper to create a patinated lamp.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2255225 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/slancha-car-boot-sale-exhibition-ldf_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Stool and chair in Slancha exhibition at LDF\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Marc Sweeney and Jake Robertson contributed experimental seating<\/p>\n<p>Instead of using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/reclaimed-materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reclaimed materials<\/a>, many of the wooden pieces in The Car Boot Sale exhibition focused on revealing the hidden histories of an object by laying bare its manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Among them were sculptural lathe-turned pieces by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marc__sweeney\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc Sweeney<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/georgerichardsonstudio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Richardson<\/a>, whose Knuck shelf retains the square profile of its standard timber lengths at key joining points.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, design duo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/korrom_projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Korrom<\/a> hand-turned Scottish sycamore to create a series of candle holders informed by antique spindle legs and crafted psychedelic red <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ettore-sottsass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ettore Sottsass<\/a> veneer into a geometric lamp.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2255220 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/slancha-car-boot-sale-exhibition-ldf_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Metal candle holders and red veneer lamp in The Car Boot Sale exhibition by Slancha\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Tea light holders by Militsa Milenkova stand next to a Korrom lamp<\/p>\n<p>Other designers featured in the exhibition include Iona McVean, By Jamps, By George Exon, Emmely Elgersma, James Grossman and Adit Abhey Poonia.<\/p>\n<p>The Car Boot Sale was part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/26\/london-design-festival-emerging-designers-roundup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing presence of emerging designers at this year&#8217;s London Design Festival<\/a>, in lieu of big brands announcing major launches.<\/p>\n<p>Among the highlights was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/22\/grain-pile-london-design-festival-wood-furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max Radford Gallery&#8217;s much-lauded Grain Pile show in Clerkenwell Fire Station<\/a> and the Mirroring Dialogue exhibition, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/24\/mirroring-dialogue-exhibition-ldf-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spotlighted design talent from London&#8217;s African diaspora<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Car Boot Sale was on show from 16 to 21 September as part of the London Design Festival.
