Sony and AMD have today released a new video on the PlayStation YouTube channel<\/a> that provides an update on the two companies’ work on Project Amethyst<\/a>, which sees them exploring the future of technology together.<\/p>\n

One part of this research shall result in the PS6, to which system architect Mark Cerny states: “Overall, it’s still of course very early days for these technologies, they only exist in simulation right now, but the results are quite promising and I’m really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years time.”<\/p>\n

This technology is focused on machine learning that will improve graphics and gameplay in the future. For now, at least, the PS5 Pro is benefiting from the research through a PSSR<\/strong> visuals upgrade<\/a> next year. This has been described as the “full-fat version” of the current FSR 4 technology available now on PC.<\/p>\n

These latest comments line up with previous statements from Sony representatives, who all point to a PS6 release that’s still a few years away. Earlier this year, Cerny said he’s working on a “multi-year plan”<\/a> in terms of the next generation. Rumours suggest the PS6 will launch alongside a handheld device, which Sony secretly seems to be preparing for via a new low-power mode for the current PS5<\/a>. There’s also speculation of Sony again opting for a detachable disc drive for the PS6<\/a>.<\/p>\n
