The Assad regime has fallen. A transitional government is in place. Borders have reopened, and more than 1 million refugees have returned home. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/news\/press-releases\/million-syrians-have-returned-home-more-support-needed-so-millions-more-can#:~:text=GENEVA%20%E2%80%93%20In%20just%20nine%20months,government%20on%208%20December%202024.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According<\/a>\u00a0to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/organizations\/united-nations-high-commissioner-for-refugees-unhcr-46715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Refugee Agency<\/a>, this is \u201ca sign of the great hope and high expectations Syrians have following the political transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since Bashar Assad fled to Moscow last December, Syria has begun to rebuild. An interim constitution is in place. Armed factions are being integrated into state institutions. Dialogue with regional and international partners has resumed. For the first time in years, American diplomats have returned to Damascus.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Syrians made more history, heading to the polls in the first parliamentary elections since the transition began. They filled 210 seats through a mix of district representation and presidential appointments. Some regions remain unrepresented \u2014 including the Kurdish-led northeast and the Druze-controlled Sweida. There are fair questions about the inclusion of minorities and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c3vz44zzp5zo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women<\/a>.
