{"id":487877,"date":"2025-10-10T08:36:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T08:36:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/487877\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T08:36:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T08:36:14","slug":"jp-morgan-staff-told-they-must-share-biometric-data-to-access-headquarters-jp-morgan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/487877\/","title":{"rendered":"JP Morgan staff told they must share biometric data to access headquarters | JP Morgan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">JP Morgan Chase has told staff moving into its new headquarters in New York that they must share their biometric data to access the multibillion-dollar building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The investment bank had previously planned for the registering of biometric data by employees at its new Manhattan skyscraper to be voluntary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, employees of the US\u2019s biggest bank who have started work at the headquarters since August have received emails saying that biometric access was \u201crequired\u201d, according to communications seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d5351d3d-d64f-4a90-a3da-d1ef8e8bea66\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Biometric access requires staff to scan their fingerprints or eye to gain access through security gates in the lobby instead of swiping their ID badges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The bank\u2019s headquarters, which cost a reported $3bn (\u00a32.25bn) to build, will eventually be a base for 10,000 employees once it is fully occupied later this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">JP Morgan declined to comment but it is understood that the use of biometric data for access is designed to make the building more secure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There are exemptions for some employees who will still be able to use a badge for access, according to the FT, although the criteria for who will use more traditional ID access is unclear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Alongside the introduction of palm and eye scanners, the company has also launched the \u201cWork at JPMC\u201d mobile app, which works as a digital badge and hub for employee services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The app allows staff to manage guest registration, navigate indoor maps of the building and pre-order meals from the building\u2019s 19 on-site dining vendors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The implementation of stricter access protocols comes as US corporations, particularly those with significant operations in New York, look to increase security after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/dec\/04\/unitedhealthcare-ceo-shooting-what-we-know-so-far\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shooting<\/a> of the chief executive of one of the US\u2019s largest health insurers in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Brian Thompson, the boss of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot not far from JP Morgan\u2019s offices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is not known if JP Morgan intends to introduce biometric access for staff at its offices in other major financial centres, such as London.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-13\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-rsfwa\">Sign up to Business Today<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Get set for the working day \u2013 we&#8217;ll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning<\/p>\n<p><strong>Privacy Notice: <\/strong>Newsletters may contain information about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties.
