Last night, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were honored as Humanitarians of the Year at Project Healthy Minds\u2019 annual gala.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means the world to have Prince Harry and Megan here,\u201d Project Healthy Minds CEO Phillip Schermer told Town & Country at the event. \u201cThey\u2019ve been incredible funders, partners, collaborators of Project Healthy Minds for five years. They get asked to show up everywhere and for them to decide that they wanted to be here for World Mental Health Day, for Project Healthy Minds, it\u2019s an incredible honor for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple were recognized for their work in building a safer world for families online, and the Duchess of Sussex spoke about the importance of community in her remarks accepting the award. \u201cOur children, Archie and Lili, are just 6 and 4 years old\u2014luckily still too young for social media, but we know that day is coming,\u201d Meghan said. \u201cLike so many parents, we think constantly about how to embrace technology\u2019s benefits while safeguarding against its dangers. That hopeful intention of separation is rapidly becoming impossible.\u201d (Coincidentally, earlier in the day, Kate Middleton released an essay she co-wrote, also warning about the dangers of screen time<\/a> for young children and families.)<\/p>\n

Meghan continued, \u201cTwo years ago, we first spoke publicly about the work we had been doing with parents around social media\u2019s devastating impact on their children. There was no better place to share this than on World Mental Health Day with Project Healthy Minds. Their dedication to expanding access to mental health support is exactly what we aim to do by building this community called The Parents\u2019 Network.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Parents\u2019 Network is a community of parents who have lost a child because of social media, or have children who have experienced \u201cnear-fatal harm\u201d or are actively struggling with \u201ctraumas related to social media use,\u201d per the Archewell Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Harry said, \u201cWe are so proud that so many of these brave parents are taking a stand, dedicating themselves for fighting for change in a David versus Goliath situation so that they can be saved from the exploitative practices and devastating consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sussexes announced last night that the Parents\u2019 Network initiative is joining forces with nonprofit ParentsTogether<\/a>, dedicated to working with families. \u201cThis connection with ParentsTogether ensures our community has the infrastructure, advocacy power, and resources needed to meet this critical moment in protecting our children,\u201d James Holt and Shauna Nep, co-executive directors of The Archewell Foundation said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Today, Prince Harry and Meghan will attend Project Healthy Minds\u2019 World Mental Health Day Festival. The conversation they\u2019re having, Schermer said, \u201cin many respects, began two years ago, to the day, at our World Mental Health Day Festival. Two years ago, they came here and they debuted there for the first time their work around parents and online harms. It was the first time they had ever talked publicly about that work. If you look at where culture has moved, it\u2019s incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n
