{"id":488608,"date":"2025-10-10T15:04:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T15:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/488608\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T15:04:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T15:04:17","slug":"open-forum-debates-the-challenges-facing-londons-hospitality-and-real-estate-sectors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/488608\/","title":{"rendered":"Open forum debates the challenges facing London&#8217;s hospitality and real estate sectors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\tReading Time:   2 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>UK: Last night the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centrallondonalliance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Central London Alliance<\/a> held an open forum in Westminster, which featured six panels addressing the challenges and opportunities facing London\u2019s economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Called London \u2013 Opportunities and Obstacles For Growth, the event was hosted by Tony Matharu, CEO of Blue Orchid Hotels, City AM editor-in-chief Christian May and IHM editor-in-chief George Sell.<\/p>\n<p>Sell moderated two panels \u2013 one on hospitality travel and tourism; and one on planning, property and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The hospitality panel featured Kate Nicholls of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukhospitality.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UKHospitality<\/a>, Tony Matharu, Piers Brown of IHM and and Jessica Berk Ross of Finn Partners.<\/p>\n<p>The UK hospitality sector faces significant challenges due to disproportionate policy changes, including increased business rates, energy costs, and employment taxes. The sector contributes \u00a33.4 billion per annum to the national tax take, with 75 per cent of profits going to the exchequer, making it the most highly taxed sector. The budget led to a loss of 100,000 jobs across hospitality. Think \u201cquality tourism\u201d \u2014 wellness, culture, gastronomy, local immersion \u2014 not \u201cmass throughput\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Investigate solutions to address infrastructure challenges and improve the ease of getting around London for businesses and visitors.<\/li>\n<li>Work with the government to address the high cost of debt and access to financing for hospitality businesses.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with the government to develop and fund training programs to support the hospitality industry\u2019s workforce and career development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The final panel on property, planning and infrastructure discussed the challenges and solutions in the UK\u2019s planning system. The speakers were Key points included the need for more planning officers, with the government pledging to recruit an extra 300, which equates to just one per local authority. The City of London\u2019s high planning approval rate (96 per cent) was highlighted, contrasting with other areas. Housing targets were debated, with a gap between the 88,000 annual target for London and the current delivery rate of 40,000. The Building Safety Act\u2019s impact on development pipelines was noted, along with the need for consistent planning policies across boroughs.
